I'd be willing to bet that that isn't the original case for the one on Vintage Silvertones. I drooled over the Sears catalog for a couple of years before I could afford one back in the early '70s and it came with a loosely fitting chipboard case like the one shown in the photo of the catalog page.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I would use this bass exclusively in a nasty sounding noise punk band and probably end up smashing it at our first show.

Just for clarity, "Montaya" is just one of probably a hundred brand names that it was sold under. The "brand name" on these was just a decal with a name given by any one particular importer.

Kaman was the distributor for Montaya. It's funny that these instruments have stayed relatively the same as a new one as far as prices for a used one

Being that it was made by Teisco, it may have had another name on the headstock.
But my money is still on it being a '69 Silvertone.

Could be a Kingston / Hagstrom / Teisco / Harmony or other Japanese bass from the 60s or early 70s.

For more clarity ( your welcome, Bongo) Hagstrom was a Swedish company, Harmony at one time was the largest manufacturer of guitars in America ( its largest customer was Sears and Roebuck) and Kingston was just a label. Tiesco was a manufacturer who also sold to Sears.

Boy, you guys are no fun! I love old cheapos! I wish there were more deals to be had on old cheapos. A couple of famous guys show up with old Kents or Teiscos, and next thing you know they're going for $1000 on Ebay.

I had an old Teisco, that looked suspeciously like this ax. It was okay, except mine had a bow in the neck. They had a kind of "surf" sound. They were ok, no vintage Fender, but a nice piece of nostalgia.
