What is your Anti-GAS?

My "anti-GAS" is poverty. Ya can't spend what ya don't have.

Truthfully, I have some GAS for the Squier 70's vibe thinline telecaster guitar for $459 and the EBMM Sterling bass with a maple fretboard for $299. However, since I already have 5 basses and 3 guitars, I really don't NEED them!

I don't know if I will ever get there. I am totally satisfied with my rigs- Bergantino cabs just make anything else I play through not do it for me. I am, in a pending GAS/NBD mode as I have a Tony Fender Fretless on order that I think, I hope, will end my GAS for new basses for a time. I also just, tonight, replaced the pup's in my older Fender American Deluxe JB with some Lindy Fralin's and an Audere preamp. The latter was totally unnecessary in reality because the bass I modded is not my number one at all but I felt compelled to do it. I guess i will not get over the Non-GAS hump until I'm no longer able to afford the equipment, or able to play. My wife has horses- they require a ferrier, and vets, and hay, and my fixing damaged fencing...so I think my "problems" pale in comparison to horses. Let GAS continue.

What less than perfect gear are okay with?

All of it, I've never had or even played a single perfect piece (not even remotely close actually) and don't ever expect to. For me the definitive anti GAS is lack of paying gigs.

New strings are my anti-gas. Anytime I think I'm getting unsatisfied with my basses, a new set of strings (for my CV P especially) generally reminds me that I don't need anything crazy. Just need to spend more time playing.

GK MB150 Combo. Unless it's LOUD, this amp has been with me on all gigs and rehearsals. Recording for me is direct. I wish it had a hpf, dual channel including mic pre amp... but I have those available externally for when I'm using an upright. I've got other amps, but it finds it's way into the car.

For me the anti-GAS is buying giant, heavy cabs that I can't sell because they are too expensive to ship. I don't live in an area where I can really sell them locally, so if I don't like them very much I just keep them anyways. I don't really want to dump more money into amps so I'll stick with my very odd, 4 ohm only cab collection which consists of an Ampeg SVT810HPC (like a "super 8x10" that weighs 60lbs more than a regular one), 2 Ampeg SVT18's, a Schroeder Mini 12R, and a Crate 1x15 that used to be a combo.

At this point in life where I'm bedroom bassist who just record at home this thing is beautiful, tubes in a small form with nice breakup character, everything sounds good through it.

What is the piece of gear that you are not totally satisfied with that is not worth replacing? For me, it is my GK MB200 amp. It sounds good, but it is fairly noisy. That said, it is plenty powerful for home or any church where I might play. I don't need to spend anymore on an amp. Similarly, I have decided I just don't need to invest much in fretless basses anymore. My Yamaha and Glarry are enough.

What less than perfect gear are okay with?

I had an Ashdown EB 12-180 and I hated it. I never got a good sound out of it (it didn't sound bad, I just didn't really like it) and the fan was so noisy. On top of all that, it weighed a ton. In fact, it was so heavy, the handle broke when I was carrying it once.

It started making a buzzing noise and I just decided to bin it when we had junk picked up from our house. I replaced it with a Fender Rumble 40 and have never been happier with a practice amp in my life.

Getting into double bass is my anti-GAS these days. Ain't nothin like sucking on a brand new instrument to show you that the weak link is not the wood but the meat bag handling it.

Sadowsky UV70/4, Mesa D800, Subway 1x15. I've sold everything else. This is all I need for any situation.

My Helix Floor and Helix Stomp. Since I bought those I didn't look at amps, cabs or effects. They may not emulate everything perfectly but I get really good tones and that's sufficient for me.

I've never settled for mediocrity, all my gear is high-end. Fender and Mesa.

For me it's not that I'm totally satisfied with my gear (though I appreciate having what I do and enjoy it all). At this point in my life and career, I simply have too many other demands on my limited time and financial resources. Maybe one day I'll get that semihollow, but today I have a kitchen renovation to plan and two kids who insist on growing up way too fast.

Interesting topic, Doc. I still drag out an ancient Fender BXR 300 and a Randall 2-10 cab to some gigs that don't have fire escapes or street lights nearby, if you know what I mean. It still works and in the worst case scenario is expendable. Not the greatest rig in the world but it's still kicking after 30 plus years.
