First step, I have to like the way it looks. I won't even bother picking it up if I don't like the looks of it.
Second step, is it $500 or under? I would maybe go up to $550.
Third step, it must feel comfortable. I like fat necks and contoured bodies with some heft to it.
Fourth step, I plug it in and hear how it sounds. I don't care how it sounds when it's unplugged because I never play live with my bass unplugged.
If all four of these steps are a go, there's a possibility I'll buy it. But I've bought basses on-line without having steps three and four. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't.
