Most of the stuff I do is direct-to-two-track location stuff of acoustic performances, with occasional multi-track sessions in home studio space.

Mics - pair of Earthworks QTC1 omnis with a Jecklin disc, pair of Neumann KT184 in ORTF, or pair of AT4050 in figure 8 pattern in Blumlein configuration. Depending upon venue, usually the Earthworks/Jecklin gives the most natural sound, while the AT4050 Blumlein setup really helps string groups sing. The KT184s usually come out a little "etched" sounding and benefit from judicious EQ.

Preamps - Great River MP2H or Millenia pre. When I need more than four channels, I use the built in pres of a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 or take direct outs from the Mackie pres in a 1402 VLZ Pro mixer (which are surprisingly good).

A/D conversion/Interface - for location two channel, Apogee PSX100 Mercenary Audio edition. Studio or multichannel stuff, the aforementioned Focusrite Scarlett 18i20.

Recording medium - Tweaked Win 10 laptop running Samplitude Producer, with an Edirol R-1 and/or Sony PCM R700 DAT running as backups for any important "can't miss" live recordings.

Mixing/Mastering - Samplitude Producer on Win 10 laptop or desktop.

Also have on hand for occasional (and increasingly rare) use two MAudio Delta1010 interfaces that still work quite well.

I know most of the digital stuff is really outdated except for the 18i20, but I do minimal processing, sampling, and editing, and have found that mic selection, placement, and preamplification is really where the biggest gains are found, and the apogee psx still holds it's own quite well.

Curious to hear what folks are recording with these days. Tell me about your...
- computer
- DAW
- interface
- recording chain up to interface
- monitors / cans
- room treatment

What are your use cases?
What works well for you?
What is the next problem to solve?
What are your desert island bits?

What is the one lesson you'd share about your journey?

I usually run my bass (typically some sort of P) straight into my REDDI DI, then to an Apogee Duet 3, into a Mac running Logic Pro. Sometimes I'll run an EQ or some other effect but for recording purposes I find that clean signal chain the best.

iMac, Logic

Interfaces vary depending on the job. For recording multiple players at once, I've most recently used a soundcraft ui24r so everybody could have their own monitor mix.

For individual tracking, I've used focusrite, Apollo and tascam interfaces. I'm not a cork sniffer when it comes to mic pres, and I'm not interested in "in the box" channel strip hardware.

I've got cheapo behringer control surfaces that do the job.

For monitoring, I've got a variety of cans, with the usual suspects from AKG, Sennheiser and Beyer.

For my bass, I plug directly into the interface from the bass, and use compression and EQ in logic, and occasionally an amp/cab sim.

Cheap and simple:

Instrument into tube DI
Presonus Studio 6/8 interface
Presonus Studio One DAW
JBL 306 Mkii monitors
AKG K240 phones

I either use plug-ins for any effects or will sometimes run my physical effects board between instrument and interface. it has worked great thus far for recreational and client work.

- computer - Recent Dell i5
- DAW - Reaper (small business license)
- interface - X32 (doubles as practice and live mixer), MIDI straight to PC from MOFX8
- recording chain up to interface
- monitors / cans - $100 Headphones/rehearsal room PA (old Yamaha 3way pa speakers)
- room treatment - basement floor carpeted, stipple ceiling and textured walls (better that you would expect)

Steinberg UR12, Cubasis, my recording chain is an MIA Fender PBj and a 10 ft guitar cord plugged into the UR12 that is connected to a laptop, monitored with a pair of non-descript ear buds.

Usually, if I'm asked to do something in a studio, I will inquire what they want me to bring, but usually I will take a Jazz and P bass, and an SVT DI. The last couple of times, they wanted a direct and cab sound, so I brought my Genz Benz Shuttlemax 12.2 and a Schroeder PL15 cab.

PC: Refurb DELL Mini Tower I5 CPU with 64GB RAM
Interface: Tascam US 16x08 (8 XLR, 2 Line/Inst, 6 line level only)
--> Behringer X2442 Mixer (Insert/Direct outputs to line inputs on the 16x08)
DAW: Cakewalk by Band Lab
--> Nektar Impact LX49 controller
Monitors: Presonus Eris E5 (PA in studio with Yamaha 12" speakers to listen at volume)
Treatment: Basic, carpet on floor, moving blanket behind bass amp. For some reason not a bad sounding room.

Use Case: Record song arrangements and edit practice recordings. Work on recording / mixing skills
What works well: Getting better tracks, Behringer preamps could be better but easier to record having the analog mixer.
Next problem to solve: Getting a good volume on mastered tracks on export

It's all good, learning a lot and having fun doing it. Later this summer thinking of upgrading to a Tascam Model 16.

- computer: 2017 iMac, showing it’s age, to be updated later this year
- DAW: Garage Band, will probably be upgraded with computer
- interface: new SSL 2+, used a Behringer XR18 in the past and would use it when I need more tha 2 simoultaneous tracks
- recording chain up to interface: SansAmp DI or DI out from Mesa Walkabout for Bass. SM57 for guitars, SM58 or Rode small diaphragm condenser for vocals. Typically into the interface pre, but I use a Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro sometimes
- monitors / cans: 15 year old KRK Rokit 5s, Sennheiser HD280 or AKG K92s
- room treatment: Books in the back wall

What are your use cases? Mostly recording bass lines and writing songs. I do some light video cutting and splicing now and then.
What works well for you?
What is the next problem to solve? Computing power
What are your desert island bits? Probably a bass and an acoustic guitar. Would have to figure out the

Comp: Dell XPS 15 i7 Win11. I'm also breaking in a Macbook Air 13 ... it's definitely a WIP at the moment
DAW: Reaper and Ableton. Just recently put Logic Pro on the Macbook Air but I would not do tracks on it just yet as I'm not comfortable with the workflow yet
Interface: Focusrite 18i8 gen3, and occasionally my Soundcraft Ui24r
Recording Signal Chain: Cali76 (NYC/sidechain), Noble, sometimes a Tech21 VT v.2
Monitoring: Beyer DT770 Pro's. I have a very basic non-headphone Cambridge Soundworks 3.1 playback system but I don't use it much.
Room Treatment: my quiet and well damped practice studio

Use cases: tracks for multiple singer songwriters and bands, and personal practice

It all works well and sounds good to me, nothing crazy but it works and my clients like the results

Next problem to solve: don't really have any problems. I am considering moving from the Dell/Win platform to Mac

Desert Island bits: hmm, My well setup, worn-in and well-loved Lull M4V and the Noble ??

Computer: Dell Latitude 5500 laptop, an Intel I7 with 16Gb ram and half a terabyte of ssd. Some external USB disks.
SO: Ubuntu Gnu/Linux (not updated, lastly).
DAW: nightly built Ardour. All free plugins.
Audio card: Soundcraft MTK12.
Monitors: Yamaha ms5p. My room needs no treatment.

For bass i use a Demeter VTBP-201 preamp. For other things (piano, keyboards, mics) i have two FMR RNP preamps.
I have several mics: AT 4050, AT2031, Fat Head Cascade, Aston Element, two matched pair Oktava MK012, etc.

I use this stuff for making my own recordings and demos. Often for the pleasure of discovering new ways to produce and mix things.

An example:

I have a crappy windows system running Reaper. I have a splitter that sends my bass to three different paths. First - the bass goes directly into my Behringer Preamp and gets its own track. Second does directly into a Sansamp RBI and gets its own track. The third track is the direct from the Behring DI but this runs through Guitar Rig 5 for bass sims.

Combining all the tracks gives me a lot of versatility. Often I turn down the Guitar Rig track but it’s nice to have options.
