You will never be disappointed. Best B string EVER! The tone is just superb, balanced and even across the board. They record great, sound amazing live, are a very comfortable weight, they can go from vintage to modern sounds very quickly (neck p/u soloed cops a great P-bass tone), and the attention to detail is fantastic. You won't get more bass for your money anywhere.

My ABI is probably the best deal I've gotten so far. For close second, though, my JC Custom SC has more tonal options and fits better in some situations where I can't get the tone I want from the Dingwall - and it's a joy to play.

my lakland 55-02 deluxe.
the only 5 string that didnt confuse me after being a 4 string player.

In the price range you're looking at I'd try a Lakland 55-02 or a Stingray if you don't mind less than 19mm string spacing at the bridge. Both of those are great gigging basses but I'm a bit biased towards the 55-02 since I love Lakland necks and wider string spacing.
