Ok, so you've got a few high-end basses and there's nothing wrong with them. You dig the tone, how they play and they're worth every penny you paid....... Then you've got this lesser, maybe even crappy bass that might be the red-headed stepchild of anyone else's bass collection but you love it. You can't put your finger on exactly why but you can't put it down and it gets a disproportionate amount of play compared to your more expensive instruments. I want to see the basses that hit way over their weight in your collection. The uglier the better. If you understand why the particular bass is so special, please elaborate. I submit my Ibanez TMB310. Definitely on the cheaper end of the scale but that bass has a thump that none of the others have and the neck is super-comfortable. More often than not, I find myself grabbing for that one over the others. So, what's your underdog bass?? 40D3DF82-3D30-4314-85DD-B57F190AE52C.jpeg

This is a parts bass that I put together. The body is from a Martin Stinger bass and the neck is from a Variax. I really like these necks and it sounds better than a lot of my other basses. I have always wanted a MIJ Fender Precision like this (no pickguard) but could just never afford it when one came up for sale.

Oh yeah, the Danzig sticker was on the bass when I got it. There were a few other stickers on it, but this is the only one I liked so......

Pretty much all of the USA Peavey basses are “giant killers”

I have never heard of a Variax until today. Very cool frankenbass.

I agree. I love Peavey pickups especially.

The red one!! Squier Classic Vibe 60’s Precision. While it’s not the one I reach for the most because Jazz basses are my thing , it just has no business being such a great bass. No need to spend more for a good Pbass . For me, this is as good as it gets .

I own a limited edition DD2 Ernie Ball Big Al, and an EBMM custom shop 25th anniversary HSS 5 string, both would likely be around or over $3k if bought new today. I also have two very well made custom basses, 4 and 5 string by DP. My 94 Peavey Fury with a GZR pickup holds it's own with them all. it has a neck very similar to the Big Al, weighs the least of them all, and sounds like any great P bass should. my only knock on it, it can have a tad bit of neck dive without a suede strap. but it still kicks. i paid $60 for it. about $180 total with the pickguard and pickup.

i actually got it in a package deal with a Greg Bennett Malibu Strat copy, both for $150, and sold the guitar for $90. so essentially got it for $60. a winner in my book. it easily plays like an $85 bass. :roflmao:

The ‘offset’ way it is attached makes the neck stay above 90degrees, so there is never any neck dive. The body is very comfortable and very thin.

My second bass was an Alvarez! I feel like I don't see too many of those around used.

Fender Jazz neck, Squier P body. With a few repairs and cosmetic updates this bad boy cost me about $400. It slays, I love this bass!

My giant killer has some battle scars.... guess it must have gone up against a Fender, Ric, or heaven forbid... an Alembic in knife fight or two...
I've got a stable of foundations... but this one (at a bank busting $75) has a great setup, fantastic tone, and when it's blazing hot, (or freezing cold) up here in Minnesota, this one just kicks butt. I could care less if I sweat over it, or gets a nick or two. Love my beater bass. (more) IMG_2302.JPG . IMG_2305.JPG

Ibanez EX405 = my most recorded bass. Super light, insanely fast/thin neck and a pair of wonderfully decent reverse split coils all in a $200 bass. And, at no additional cost....1989 pointy goodness.

All-me original from a couple months ago recorded on a Tascam 8-track. The bass can be heard isolated at :30.

Here’s my entry. An early 80’s Schecter neck paired with what I’m pretty sure is a Tom Anderson body, EMG’s and an original Badass bridge. Its just a face melter!

  18. I bought my MIJ Heartfield Prophecy II in 1994 for $350 and gigged it mercilessly. It's an awesome bass with a really nice scooped funk tone and slightly wide string spacing, perfect for popping the D string. Whenever I pick it up, it just fits me perfectly and I feel right at home. 1217171112_HDR(1).jpg
