I bought this late '03 to early '04 American P bass in 2007 for around $700 from what I remember.
It's the P bass years with the S-1 switch that evokes such strong reactions in so many people.
The person I bought it from (who was the original owner) modified it to look like a 57 reissue and they did a pretty good job. I tend to play over the last few frets or using the ashtray to rest my thumb on, so nothing really gets in the way.
This thing is my mojo bass - nothing else feels like this thing does in my hands and I feel like I can play it better than any other bass I've owned. It's like putting on a pair of old leather boots that are to fit to you, not sure how else to explain it.
