What is your "one day..." bass?

Would love a pre CBS Fender with a Brazilian board, since I have a bunch of P's my ideal bass would be a stack-pot jazz bass with a skinny neck profile. Then I'd grow a mustache so I could be like Bobby Vega.

I tried one out at our local high-end music emporium and I was seriously impressed - especially the E string. If I was earning money from playing bass, I'd have bought it on the spot.

That Suhr and the Fender Custom Shop basses are the only ones I've played that I thought were appreciably better than my humble collection.

I'm boring about such things. Onstage, I go with what works and my Precision V is my first choice.

I'd LOVE to own one of those Entwistle Alembic Explorer or V-shaped basses he owned.

IF I was buying for myself, I'd default to what I know works, not surprising nor unusual. Just bummed Fender Mod Shop won't allow for adding a gold or silver anodized PG's on basses. Also limited options for an ash body on basses. Hit us with the ash up-charge but include more colors especially natural ash, it used to be offered. Many would likely buy that.

You've gotta keep the faith; It took me years to finally get one.

First, I bought a second-hand 5 string JJ - I'm not a JB fan, OR a 5 player, so it stayed in the case more often than not.

Eventually I found the soapbar 4 during lockdown, sold the 5, which comfortably paid for the 4 - It doesn't have the exact sound I want, but I've never felt such a playable bass.

Now, I'm looking to build a clone of it with a different pickup config.

Set alerts on Ebay, and keeping searching here/Basschat

Appreciate the words of encouragement.

But now that I think about it... If I were to hypothetically get my hands on a Pedulla Rapture 4 (my wishful thinking bass), would I even like it better than my #1 bass (a heavily modded ESP/LTD HTB-600) or my backup bass (a Reverend Decision P)? After trying a Rapture 4 with the single soapbar, would I still prefer what I have at home? I've been in situations where I've tried some elite level basses and though I recognized how pinnacle they were, I still preferred what I had at home.

I know exactly what you mean. I had a Traben 4 string which I learned like the back of my hand, and no bass 4 x the price could compare to how playable I found it.

I'd still hedge my bet with the Rapture, just on how it feels.

Getting used to one Bart soapbar, on the other hand..

Though I've never had a bass with a single pickup in the sweetspot, I think I'd do well with one. I tend to keep my plucking hand over the bridge pickup and having one pickup there won't get in the way if I slap or play with a pick. Plus fewer knobs get in the way when I'm playing chords and such.

You know... I might have to change my "one day" bass to a Reverend Greg Norton signature UltraBomb. One "sweetspot" humbucker and passive electronics (which I prefer). Plus, I love Reverend necks.

I don't have anything in the "one day" bass column. No desire to own another bass whatsoever and am actually attempting to send some fine instruments that are not getting played to new homes. Having said that, there are two basses that I've been intrigued with for the longest time but never had a chance to play either of them. Could one of them possibly break my willpower ? I won't know until I try...

1) Kubicki EX-Factor. Yeah, I've been lusting after one for just about three days short of forever, but they were scarce in Europe back then and our paths nevers crossed even when I lived in The States. Could it be "the missing link" ? Who knows.

2) Dan Armstrong London Bass, short-scale version. Just weird and lovable, but I have a strong suspicion - based on pictures only - thet its neck profile would not agree with my aging and ailing hands. Wouldn't mind trying one nevertheless.

Honourable mention: Stradi Symphony. I most likely have absolutely zero use for one, and most certainly no need for it, but they look so cool IMO that I wouldn't resist trying one. Could I be swayed into purchasing it ? Unlikely, but I was surprised with my own unknown unknowns before so...;)

My (depriciating daily along with the upcoming SS) $0.02...
