What is your "one day..." bass?

I guess we all have them: basses you don't have immediate GAS, use or money for, but always think "one day...". It'll probably never happen (or maybe it will?) but it'll be in your head forever and every time one comes up for sale, you go "shall I..." but you never do it.

Well, that's how my head works anyway. I have that with a couple of basses. I want want just because I like them somehow, but I know I'll probably never buy one because I have no direct use for them.

First, a Rob Allen Mouse. I played one when I was 14 and have wanted one ever since (I'm almost 36 now). But I have no practical use for one at all and for "just for fun", it's a bit too pricey.

Second, a pre-EB Stingray. I have never been, currently am not and will never be a Stingray player. I've owned a USA Sterling, currently have a Sterling Stingray and I just can't get along with the necks and the sound of Stingray. Even so, every time a vintage Stingray pops up for sale, I go "well...shall I?"

And then there's a vintage Höfner Club Bass. I have a cheap Chinese Höfner that I really like as something at home, but it's not a bass (or a feel) gig with. But yeah. They're hella cool and recently I've tested a vintage reissue Club for a magazine that I really considered keeping.

Are the inlays on that Höfner Club Bass inset?

For me I have always wanted a 5 string Warwick Thumb bass. When teenage me found Mudvayne I got hooked. I'm sure Ryan had a bigger impact than the bass, but then again I don't enjoy his tone with Fodera. It may be all in my head, but that was such a huge hit for my nostalgia. I'm sure he enjoys the bass, as he keeps playing it

Edit: I agree with the Stingray basses. I've owned a few Sterling versions and it never clicked with me. I love their look, others get amazing sounds out of them, but for me... I need to stick to window shopping on those.

Since the late '70s I've always wanted an Alembic (like Stanley Clarke sig style)

I know it's a short scale, and I'm not a short scale guy. I expect they neck dive. They're out there for $10K-$15K depending on the order. Way out of my spending range.

Despite all this, I WANT it.


Incidentily, re your Stingray comment: I had a late 90's StingRay which had neck instability, dead spot, and a 3 band preamp I just couldn't make work in our band mix. Sold it a few years ago after decades trying to love it. I did love the feel of it, though.

Anyway, FFWD to now, and I picked up a StingRay special. Neck is stable. Zero dead spots that I can detect, preamp is different, and I'm not sure how exactly, but it sounds so great in the same band mix.

This model was never reissued when the brand was resurrected. Based on my two Danos, I'd guesstimate the weight at about 10 pounds.

I've been looking at adding a short scale bass to the mix for years, finally decided against a Mustang and found something that scratched just the right itch: this short scale from Retrovibe in the UK. I'm in the beginning stages of fleshing it out and expecting to order in a week or two. (I've always kind of like paisley Tele basses from early 70's, but thought how cool would it be for the layout to be similar to a '72 Tele Custom? )

Since I've built both my basses, I really don't have a "one day" bass. I will say that I would love to play an Fbass 6 and a Roscoe 6 just once for comparison to mine. I had played a Zon 6 several years ago which was OK, but I liked mine better.
