String spacing is the most important thing for me when it comes to 5-ers. 19mm at the bridge, please, and the wider the spacing is at the nut, the better.
My custom 5, the one in my avatar, has a very wide nut (2") and the string spacing matches that of a 4-string with a 1 3/4" nut width. That's my ideal. I can go a wee bit narrower but I prefer wide.
I like a 35" scale but it's not a deal breaker. My J5 (an Alleva-Copollo) is 34" and feels great. I also prefer active 5s but, again, not a requirement.
I'm not fussy about neck attachment or pickup configuration. Those are just flavors to me and I like all kinds of flavors.
