What Is Your View On Rap/Hip-Hop?

I just want to clarify that I am a fan of real MC's from the "Golden Age" of Hip-Hop and not that stuff you hear on the radio people call, "Rap." I appreciate the art form or any art form that expresses one's feelings and what not, but I don't appreciate when a newer generation of rappers completely dismantles an art form by insulting woman, cursing every 5 seconds, discussing the same controversial subject in every song, and so much more. I know a lot of you bass players on here are older and may not understand the art form at all, but to people like me who are from impoverished areas where dealing drugs and killing is encouraged, Hip-Hop was a way for some people living in those areas to relate to one another and escape that reality together. Just like any other genre of music, Hip-Hop has it's artists that helped define that genre and that are still trying to keep it going, while other people simply take it and mold it into a way to vent their feelings about ridiculous crap like Sex, Drugs, and...well mainly those two. I appreciate Hip-Hop and hope others can do the same and learn not to judge from what they hear on the radio, but from what they hear from the past MC's who actually were trying to tell their stories and true feelings about all things meaningful.
Well anyways, what's your guy's view of Rap/Hip-Hop?

I don't think it is an art form ...just like most of music I don't see it as an art form because it is too tied to please the crowd ... which mean you'll do what they want ( cover ) or you'll put a lot of water in your beer to be sure to reach a huge crowd and have money ... This isn't how it works with painting, dance etc ... which I find quite sh** anyway !

I find rap and hip hop to be a joke ... they try way to much to be bad ass and put us money in our face. I know that NWA was to me a lot more real and real cry from the heart but after that it was all about the money, girls, drugs, insult other rappers etc which to me is a joke. I can't take them seriously trying so hard to be tough ...

This is certainly true for a good amount of the rap out there, but if you look beyond the obvious then you'll find there are a number of rappers who don't fall into the category you've outlined. Just a few that come to mind: Roots Manuva, Ohmega Watts, Michael Franti, Shinehead, Jurassic 5, J-Live, Talib Kweli, Bahamadia...

But I must say that I really like Epic Rap Battle on YouTube just because it is really well made and they doesn't take themselves seriously. It also shows a lot of works but it is all entertainment and nothing else.

That really depends on what blues you're talking about (there's plenty of one chord blues out there) just as it depends on what rap you are talking about.
