Since I play in an all originals band, and have been for about 3 years with regular gigging, I usually just crank out songs of our own.

This reminded me of a conversation I had with a concert violinist about twenty years ago not a bass-related story, but a true story nonetheless and definitely worth repeating. She told me how the whole orchestra would blow off a little steam at the end of the occasional rehearsal by breaking into a few bars of "Foxy Lady". Mind you, they'd only do it if they were working with a conductor who had a sense of humor or was "cool with it".
As a band, we warm up with a cover at soundcheck. Something by The Stooges always gets the blood pumping.
We don't soundcheck with any song from our set, no spoilers. A couple of months ago, I saw a band soundcheck an entire song and then 10 minutes later started their set with the exact same song. We all looked at each other and said "Never do that".

Walking twelve-bar blues out of D. Hits pretty much all the range in which I play, and gives plenty of chance to vary the volume of my playing and see how the room and my rig sounds.
Oh, and neither of my bands plays the blues, so it doesn't step on anything that'll get played soon after.
