what kind of battery do you use?

For years now I haven't paid for a battery. Our tech guy at church is mega paranoid about one of the wireless mics going out, so they change the batteries out by the case. Every few months or so, I will walk around during soundcheck and pickup the "used ones." I still get 3-4 months out of them. I probably have a half a shoe box full at home.

anyway, as far as for wireless stuff like my IEMs that eat a battery in one night i'm quite pleased with the current EBL li-ion rechargeables, at 600mAh they have quite a bit more juice than a regular alkaline. i discovered after playing a double one day that they'll almost handle two entire 3-set gigs.

four of 'em plus a smart charger for less than $25 is just insane.

i use these for my shure PSM700 in-ears; i keep a two-space charger wired into my little IEM rack, when my in-ears get power the charger does too, with two spares cooking and one in my pack. at the beginning of each gig i swap out the used battery from the last gig for one that spent the last gig being charged up.

they still don't make sense in a low-drain, long life use like a bass (or a smoke alarm) but i have read reports of people having good luck with a different kind of rechargeable, one that has less capacity (mAh) but lives at a higher voltage (more like 10V as opposed to 8.4V for the li-ions) and doesn't self-drain. i think the tenergy types are like this, they even show them as suitable for smoke alarms.

they don't make a AA version, much to my annoyance!

li-ion rechargeable AAs have never been a thing because the minimum voltage for the individual internal cell is like 3.6V. (i've seen some attempts with voltage regulators built into the battery to hold them down to 1.5V, but they seem kind of sketchy and not ready for prime time.)

for AA rechargeables i stick with the industry standard eneloop white, the 2000 mAh ones.
