What makes a GOF?

Long gone are the days when being carded meant something about your appearance. Nowadays the groceries and drugstores want to scan your ID as a matter of store policy and NO alcohol sales will transpire without that scan. You could be 100 years old, and it doesn't matter. They want your ID.

At my age I want a fake ID so I can order from the kid's menu because the regular menu portions are too much for me to eat.

I'm 35 but I am also one that has never had the patience for nonsense. I can get along in the moment but, generally speaking.

I do thing I qualify as a GOF in a since in that it's more...........................I ask why the nonsense must exist to begin with.

I think the perception, to younger people with less life experience, is negative of that sentiment (asking why the nonsense exists)......for some reason.

So far I'm still passing for middle age so I hear a lot of stuff from middle agers about the olde codgers. I never tell them I'm an old codger because it's a very educational experience to hear the misconceptions of the group that's on the verge of replacing me in the codger category.

I am an old bass player and recently, I was recalling what has made me a GOF. One incident comes to mind...

A few years back, I was upgrading the sound system in a new vehicle. I wanted a subwoofer and ordered one from a local shop. I went to the Service Counter and a young man presented one from inventory and, while ringing up the sale he asked "Is this sub for you?". Surprised, I answered "Yes, but why do you ask?". He responded, "Well, we usually sell these to younger people".

I smiled and made a note to check the mirror when I got home and never to go back there again.

Anyone else?

If any of these twerps ever stood in front of a cranked SVT head powering two 8 ten cabs amplifying a PB, maybe us GOFs would get a little more respect....lol!!!

I'm 68, but people are dumbfounded when I tell them that; they guess me to be around 50. I still lift weights and I still have biceps! I feel funny when I ask for the senior discount, as if the sales person thinks I'm lying about my age. I actually wish he/she would ask to see my ID, but that never happens.

So, I don't get a lot of the old age treatment, but the next time the bagger at the grocery store asks, "Do you want help out with those, sir?", I'm going to respond, "No, do you wanna arm wrestle?" :D

You guys wouldn't last here in the South. We say "sir" and "ma'am" to EVERYBODY. You could be 16 years old and get the same treatment.

My version of GOF is pretty tame. I do have less patience for nonsense. But I don't get mad about it. I simply state calmly that I'm not putting up with whatever the nonsense is. If that means I quit your band, hire another contractor, or leave your house, fine. I'm not saying YOU have to conform to my world view. I'm just not conforming to yours.

The single exception is traffic.... with a twist. Most people drive more slowly as they age. Traffic GOFs usually raise heck at fast drivers. I'm the opposite. GOFs in their stinking Toyota Prius(es) driving 40 in a 45 PISS ME OFF. If YOU have nowhere to be, fine. Wait until non-commuter hours to go there. If you're too old to handle the pressures of a four-way stop or a leading left, STAY HOME. You are unsafe to others and shouldn't have a license. I think profiling should come back with regard to traffic stops. Only this time, leave African Americans alone and pull over every single WHITE lady in a Buick or a Prius. Issue a field hand-eye coordination test. If you don't pass, your license gets shredded on the spot. Have your kids come pick you up.

:wacky:

Well, I don't know if anyone can top this! As I wipe up my coffee spill, I am printing out this response to put in a frame. Thanks for the treat @two fingers ...

58 here but not so grumpy any more. Life has a way of chipping off the rough spots. I'm way more laid back than I was as a younger man. I agree with some that have said there are grumpies in every age group. I don't really want to be one of them. Just want to enjoy life and not take things too seriously.

This is the one that cracks me up. The younger people who complain about older people being, you know, who and what they are, those people sound like grumpier old farts than we do. I call them members of the future curmudgeons club.

I'm in the group here that probably acts younger than I am, and I always looked younger than my age. When I was in my 20's I hated that, but it's an asset now. I love wearing completely age-inappropriate clothing and hair on stage and yukking it up like a kid. Keeps me feeling young, and I don't really have a good reason to want to feel old instead, so there ya go.
