What makes a Precision so good?

I have my own opinion. I'm just curious of yours. Nostalgia? Tone? Feel? History?

If the P bass wasn't the 'original' (so to speak) would it still be as popular today?

I'm a big P bass fan, it's got what I'm looking for. Growl, tone, looks... etcetera.
Around here? Nostalgia. TB trends a little older, and there are alot of babyboomers here that are hung up on the music of the 60s and 70s, where the P bass is prevalent.
Its mid focused tone is great for thin arrangements. Either in early rock or Motown it was a major driver.
I don't see them as much in younger acts anymore because they get buried under thick guitars or sound to monochromatic. It doesn't lend itself to fast playing or playing high up the register.

The Precision is highly functional, a classic sound which as so many have said "sits in the mix". I like P basses a lot and have probably done more gigs in terms of raw numbers on a P than anything else.

That being said, I now prefer a J bass in series wiring. I find it to be similar to but actually tonally superior to the P bass. When I gig on my P bass now I always feel like it's "almost right, but not quite". Just my 2 cents...
