I love the Ibanez SR line of basses. You can get into it very cheaply and then move up to higher quality wood and components while still having the same feel. So far I stepped up once and I love my SR700. I don't consider that to be a cheap bass but it is less than half the cost of a "high end" production bass. I love the look and playability of that bass. I started with the SR300 which I think I paid less than $300 about 20 or so years ago for it.
I owned a Premium SR 5er and it was beautifully made. The biggest thing against SR basses for me is the preamp. To compare to a high end boutique, I would have to replace the preamp for sure. The Nordy PUs deserves a better pre IMO (on the higher end SRs).
In any case, I recently bought a new BTB 6er which is also a great bass. Very few people would likely say it sounds better than a comparable Fodera, but the BTB was under $1k and still kills.
