What makes fEARFUL Cabs so scary?

You seem to want to dismiss fEARFuls outright by giving the VERY few examples of commercially available cabs that can compete with them. There are other cabs available that can compete with fEARfuls. Very few that can hang with them in all areas. They're out there, but not many.

fEARfuls excell at true low end output, so you dismiss them by saying "who wants to go that low anyway?" Which does nothing but discredit your opinion because you are simply changing the subject, which I do believe was "What makes fEARFUL Cabs so scary?"

I don't have a dog on this fight nor have tried them myself. Just asking questions and trying to understand the hype. That's all...

Hype is marketing bs. Nothing we've said about answering your questions is anything but factual...to which instead of asking more sincere questions, you simply say that everything a fEARful is known for is either covered by other cabs, or isn't important to anyone.

Again...what's your point?

I wonder how long it is going to take for these threads to stop popping up. You know, the one where the OP pretends to show remote interest in details about fEARfuls, but is just looking for an opportunity to trash them. We get it, you don't want one. This crap is worse than political arguments.

Til more people get big Es and the haters move on.

I wish I could hear some of the fEARful cabs! There is such a strong following for them here on TalkBass. It's like they are the "true religion"!

I realize that the Acme bass cabs have low db (loudness) for one watt @ 1 meter but being the owner of an Acme B-1 and B-2, I just don't see how fEARfuls or any other bass cab could produce a better low bass frequency that is as clean and clear as the Acmes.

I'd love to hear some of you fEARful owners comment on the comparison of Acme vs fEARful. Given already that the Acme's are low efficiency cabs and are not loud.

(In reading Andy's explaination of cab building...........the trade-off. Long excursion speakers are inefficient but can do the 35hz to 40 hz. Efficient speakers are loud but can't hit the open E mark let alone the open B.)

I assumed the OP wanted to know why the fEARful cabs are so scary (which I read as...badass).

I really don't know why so many want to trash fEARfuls. There are so many great cabs out today for bass players to choose from and fEARfuls are just one of them that many of us like a lot (like anyone else who likes their choice a lot). Even TB's own Tom Bowlus said "these are the real deal" and did a review of them in Bass Gear Magazine.

Acmes sacrifice sensitivity to produce 30-40hz that fEarfuls don't. They're yet another tradeoff.

A fEarful is about as loud per watt as a typical bass cab of its size, generally. An Acme is 3-6db quieter, but extends down to 30hz instead of 40hz.

A fEarful 12/6 is a hair more sensitive than an Acme B2, and has a bit more displacement, and the midrange driver can take more pounding.

Those Clairs are some of the best monitors that i have ever heard...!! and Meyer might be up a step from that.. IMO..
Ive bone gigs with a pair of these as mu monitor and BASS. Yes Bass... sounded ridiculously good...
used a Meyer115 years ago... it was smoking good....

I don't know if that applies to the US, but around here the standard monitor used in large systems is a tiny 12am. This:

Any of you know it or heard it? THAT is scary...

Honestly? Reading the whole feeling I get a gut feeling that this is more hype than truth and I can sense that there's a bunch of fEARful lovers that haven't ever heard one.

In music gear, most times we see trends like this that seem too good to be true, are too good to be true...

I just wanna clarify (for others) that since the fEARful uses a driver with longer x-max, it can handle more watts, and therefore if powered to capacity can push more air:hiding:

similar output per watt x more watts=more volume

I think many posters here own and gig a fEARful or similar "super" cabs , myself included. If you haven't heard one, then go ahead and trust your ears:p

Oh hey hey hey now, I didnt start this thread to trash fEARfuls at all. I just wanted to learn more about them. I think it's sweet that Greenboy posted his cab designs on the web for all to use for free, thats amazingly awesome of him. Luckily enough i think i may have the oppurtunity to play one since I live pretty close to the authorized builder in Pennsylvania.

Do you think it's possible anyone is going to post something in this thread that changes your mind?

There are fEARful owners all over the world. This is a relatively new cab (only a few years old in it's development and now distribution) so it's not like you'll find one at GC.

I've been a cab designer for more than twenty years. The concept is not new but the speakers utilized are. You are basing your "gut feeling" on pre-existing speakers and cabs that have serviced the bass community well for the last 50 years (and many still do).

There have been a lot of advancements made in speaker technology and fEARfuls take full advantage of that to do something most cabs (not utilizing these designs or speakers/crossovers) can't do as well. It's that simple.

If you ever head up north, you are welcome to stop by and hear my fEARfuls (and compare them to the AudioKinesis, Acmes, Bergs and Baers - sorry, no Schroeders or Epifani anymore).

Tom.

Apologies, friend. For whatever reason, I thought MarthaSamira was the OP. Didn't mean to offend you. I edited my post.

Sure it's possible.

This makes sense to me:

If loudness with lower wattage is your only goal, then get a cab that isn't tuned as low. Everybody knows that's the tradeoff for having a cab that goes low, or at least everyone in this thread should know it. Some people like cabs that go low, some don't. I happen to be one that doesn't. But it doesn't make anyone else's choices less valid. See? That's the beautiful thing about it...not everyone likes what I like, and I've long come to grips with that. Oh sure, it made me suicidal and homicidal at first, but then I got over myself ;)
