What neck is this? Real, Re-issue, or Fake??

Conflating Fender C neck profile with Fender C neck width.

"Neck Shapes Mid '60s "C"" refers to the neck profile, not to be confused with Fender A, B, and C neck widths (at the nut). The A, B , or C to the right of the mfg. date in the stamp on the neck heel refers to the nut width, not neck profile.

A Jazz Bass neck with 1-1/2" nut width is categorized by Fender as an A neck. This is one big clue why the heel stamp on the neck in question with the OP is fake. We can believe ours that it's obviously a 1-1/2" or A width J neck; however, the stamp indicates C width, obviously fake.

Considering the poor quality of photo image exposure provided, the fretboard material could be either pau ferro or Indian rosewood (with light stripiness, years poorly maintained, dried out).

That's the impression I'm getting - it sounds like the buyer was upfront about the provenance of the neck to the best of his abilities, and never tried to convince OP that this was an original 1965 Fender Jazz neck.

the seller himself said he thought he sanded off a mexican serial number. doesn't sound like he lied?

Personally, I think I'd take this much newer neck, which is very nicely redone to look semi-vintage, has what I personally consider to be a preferably larger thickness slab fingerboard (rather than laminate), and probably will last much longer without needing work done to it.

It was sold as a refin that was probably mexican, so hopefully the price was for a refin mexican neck, and voila. All good. Sounds like a good purchase to me, without surprises. I think the stamp was done very convincingly.... I can't see clear flaws in the font choice compared to the other "real" 65 period necks in this thread, but the choice of what was stamped on the neck is clearly incorrect. So to me, that suggests that the manufacturer might even mark it that way, which is knowingly not correct for a real 65, because it is not a real 65.... it's this manufacturer's tribute to a 65 neck. If the stamp was added later by someone to increase the value, that's pretty pathetic, but people do what they do.

Still, looks great, and I'd happily assemble a bass with that neck on it, for the right price.

Seeing as it has a flat laminated fingerboard and not a round laminated fingerboard it is not a 65.
Fender started doing round laminated fretboards in mid to late 1962, and it became the standard by 1963. So the date stamp is fake.
The neck could possibly be a Fender neck, but it is not a real vintage neck.

He sold you a neck with a 65 stamp on it (and a slab board, which means it isn't a 65), and now he says he sanded off a Mexican serial number (they didn't make any necks in 5). Those are 3 stories that don't agree. Believe what you want, but the hallmark of someone lying to you is that the story keeps changing.

firstly, I just commented on my observations - I'm not the OP and didn't buy the neck. Secondly, the OP said in the first post that the seller of the neck told him about what he thought was a mexican serial. As far as I read the info from the OP, that isn't something he added to the story later, although who knows... I am just basing this on the facts listed in the OP. Not sure why you thought that the mexican serial was "and now he says"..... cuz it's right in the OP. Did the OP change the post adding that info after you originally read the post?

The manufacturer did not stamp this as a 1965 P bass - somebody did this for fraudulent reasons
