What rack mount compressor?

Look, Ma! Only three knobs. Even I can figure it out. Just bought one last weekend. I put it in my rig, works great, still don't need compression, but it's going in my PA rig anyway (for lead vocals). A bit pricey ... $399 most places, $349 or so at GC, if you threaten or beg.
 
I was running a DBX 266XL in my rig, but it was killing my low end when I was slapping, for example, on a low B string, not to mention rasing my noise floor. So I just replaced it with a TC Electronics Triple-C multiband compressor. Seriously. Wow. Noise is virtually gone, and the compression is amazingly transparent. Three bands of compression with variable thresholds and crossover points is very nice. Plus it's MIDI controllable, so I've got it linked to my ADA preamp, so when I change banks on the preamp for differnent bass tones it also changes banks on the compressor for the same. Not to mention S/PDIF digital outs if your into digital recording. Swanky. Kinda pricey (generally about $350 on ebay) but mine is now an integral part of my rig.

That sounds good.
 
A compressor can do two things to your sound. It can make your sound better or totally f**k it up. be carefull w/ the compressor. If you dnot know 100% how to run it, it will become a headache. If you are happy with your sound, then dont buy one just to fill a rack space. Now, to answer you question.

The Alesis compressors are garbage (IMO). The DBX 160 is a good choice as well as the Rane DC22. I have the DC22. However I use it for my PA, not my bass rig. Get a compressor that has very few knobs to dink with. They are less confusing to operate. The DBX 106 and Rane DC22 are both easy units to operate. The Rane cost me $250 new. have not seen one on the used market.

Go to Invalid Link Removed. They have a "live sound and production" forum. Do a search there or post a thread. That forum has a ton of highly experienced sound guys who could be a ton help for you as well.
 
I second the PreSonus ACP-22. After trying three different dbx compressors (with the 1066 being my favorite of these), I bought a PreSonus, and it really does the best job of any of them. Very transparent, and great all around for bass (and drums, BTW).

That's interesting...I don't have that problem at all, even when I run the rig with out the 120a. I use the settings that some one set out in another thread for the Behringer compressor, sounds really nice to me!

What's the rest of your rig consist of?

Mmmmm...JoeMeek. I use a VC1Qcs in my rack. You can crank that baby all the way up and it *still* sounds tasty!

Look for a used JoeMeek or a new tfpro. Otherwise, use nothing but optical compressors.

I'm happy with my RNC. :D I keep mine in the FOH rack so our sound guy can tweek as necessary.

Compressors
Compressors are signal processing units used to reduce (compress) the dynamic range of the signal passing through them. The modern use for compressors is to turn down just the loudest signals dynamically. For instance, an input dynamic range of 110 dB might pass through a compressor and exit with a new dynamic range of 70 dB.

This clever bit of processing is normally done using a VCA (voltage controlled amplifier) whose gain is determined by a control voltage derived from the input signal. Therefore, whenever the input signal exceeds the threshold point, the control voltage becomes proportional to the signal’s dynamic content. This lets the music peaks turn down the gain.

Before compressors, a human did this at the mixing board and we called it gain-riding. This person literally turned down the gain anytime it got too loud for the system to handle. You need to reduce the dynamic range because extreme ranges of dynamic material are very difficult for sound systems to handle.

If you turn it up as loud as you want for the average signals, then along comes these huge musical peaks, which are vital to the punch and drama of the music, yet are way too large for the power amps and loudspeakers to handle. Either the power amps clip, or the loudspeakers bottom out (reach their travel limits), or both — and the system sounds terrible.

Or going the other way, if you set the system gain to prevent these overload occurrences, then when things get nice and quiet, and the vocals drop real low, nobody can hear a thing. It’s always something. So you buy a compressor. Using it is quite simple: Set a threshold point, above which everything will be turned down a certain amount, and then select a ratio defining just how much a “certain amount” is.

All audio below the threshold point is unaffected and all All signal hanges less than this setting essentially produce zero output, i.e., the output is muted. audio above this point is compressed by the ratio amount. The earlier example of reducing 110 dB to 70 dB requires a ratio setting of 1.6:1 (110/70 = 1.6).

The key to understanding compressors is to always think in terms of increasing level in dB above the threshold point. A compressor makes these increases smaller. From our example, for every 1.6 dB increase above the threshold point the output only increases 1 dB. In this regard compressors make loud sounds quieter. If the sound gets louder by 1.6 dB and the output only increases by 1 dB, then the loud sound has been made quieter. Some compressors include attack and release controls.

The attack time is the amount of time that passes between the moment the input signal exceeds the threshold and the moment that the gain is actually reduced. The release time is just the opposite — the amount of time that passes between the moment the input signal drops below the threshold and the moment that the gain is restored.

These controls are very difficult to set, and yet once set, rarely need changing. Because of this difficulty, and the terrible sounding consequences of wrong settings, Rane correctly presets these controls to cover a wide variety of music and speech one less thing for you to worry about.

System overload is not the only place we find compressors. Another popular use is in the making of sound. For example when used in conjunction with microphones and musical instrument pick-ups, compressors help determine the final timbre (tone) by selectively compressing specific frequencies and waveforms.

Common examples are “fattening” drum sounds, increasing guitar sustain, vocal “smoothing,” and “bringing up” specific sounds out of the mix, etc. It is quite amazing what a little compression can do.

i'm an upright player. i have a dead spot on my bass that's really annoying. sometimes when i play there,it's so quiet, it actually sounds like i've stopped playing for a moment . i 've read that compression can increase sustain. can someone explain how it increases sustain, and tell me if it is sometimes used to help dead spots, and if so how?
 
Just as the post above explains, it makes it possible to increase the average volume by decreasing the dynamic range. Loud portions of the material are so much louder than the quiet sections that you cannot hear the quiet parts.

This even pertains to a single note. With bass there is a very large dynamic range within a single note event. This is because the attack is very percussive. This means that the attack can be as much as 10x as loud as the sustained note. If you reduce the attack using compression, you will be able to have a louder sustained note section. This means the note appears to sustain longer because the note has emnough volume for a longer period.

Unfortunately, this has the side effect of changing the envelope of the note. I personally find this undesireable with fretless bass. I imagine it would be less than satisfactory with upright too. You will not get as much thump on the note attack, and the note will not bloom in the same way.

On the other hand, if you use very low compression, say less than 2:1 and learn how to use threshold, attack, and release well, you will likely get a suitable sound.
 
Please note that a "good" compressor should not color or affect the quality of your sound. You, to a certain extent, should not be able to tell that you are using compression. When using compression correctly, you should have the same "sound" as before you added compression. Although your "sound" should be tighter/controlled. Compression should not alter the "voice" of your sound.

It should also be mentioned that a good compressor can *also* be used to *expand* the dynamic range, especially with highly percussive sounds like a thumpin' bass line.

If you set your attack control long enough to skip the initial pluck, and then use the threshold and ratio controls to reduce the volume of the resultant sustaining portion, with a long enough release to keep this section down until the string decays naturally, you can then use the make-up gain to boost the sustaining portion back to "normal" levels. If your release setting isn't long enough, you can sometimes get ramping-up volume effects as the compressor releases faster than the string decays below the threshold. This can be pretty cool as an effect.

This will have the effect of amplifying your attack even louder while maintaining your average volume.

This is probably the most overlooked use of compression, again, especially on bass guitar.

I sometimes find it useful to use two compressors. One before the preamp to smooth out the differences between different basses (and even within a single bass!), and one after the preamp for a more obvious compression effect. However, it should recognized that one compressor is usually enough...
 
Does anyone get any Noise or Hum from there compressor??

I am using a DBX 166XL and as soon as I plug it into my amp I get a low hum(like 60hz).. If i go straight to the bass without the compressor I get no hum..

I have tried my Mesa/Boogie M-2000(Head) and a Peavey Minx(Practice Amp) and I get the noise on Both. I try a regular FX pedal and I get no noise at all..
