If you want to make a profit, don't post what you paid for it in public, especially the same place you are trying to sell it.
I fail to see how that logic is escaping you.

Your best bet is to look for a trade at this point. Or return it, or sell it elsewhere.
Take a look through the classifieds here, basses being sold for the Same price or less than what they paid for it, often listing the original post they bought it from. Bold faced money grabs generally don't sit well with most folks, yourself included if you think about it.

I kinda think the same way. Nothing wrong with making a profit, but you were here like 2 days ago bragging about it. I'd try elsewhere, or wait a little while if you really want to sell it here.

It's not too often that GC sells used stuff below market value. Maybe the OP got lucky. An item is worth whatever a buyer is willing to pay and that's not necessarily what the seller is asking.

Thank you old Plucker. I did get a deal and I feel someone looking for this model will get the same good deal. The other guy wants me to put it "Elsewhere" First. Why? if it was me looking for this model (and by the way if it had a Maple neck I would have paid $1200 for it) I sure would buy it and not care what the other person paid for it. And I would love to sell it here before I put it on ebay or someplace else. IAM NOT GOING TO MAKE A MILLION DOLLARS ON IT ALL I REALLY WANT IS TO TRADE IT OUTRIGHT FOR A BASS I LIKE. this is the worth I put on it by checking the forum here for what they where selling for it the past. if iam doing something wrong iam sorry but I just dont see it that way I guess. if it was reversed and someone got a deal and I wanted to buy it and I knew they would make a profit I would be happy for that person and myself for getting something I wanted. oh well dammed if you do dammed if you dont....lol

so you don't think a bass like this is worth $1200? What do you think it's worth? And I wonder if I would get all this wonderful concern if I paid $900 for the bass and sold it for $700...lol

Something just seems a bit off-putting about this situation. I think it has something to do with how quickly all of this went down. You were VERY excited about this bass less than a week ago, when you posed the question to us about whether or not you should trade out your new P/J. And then you posted a NBD thread when you got it, excited about how much you liked it. But now you're already moving to get rid of the bass? And because of the fretboard material? Thats an aspect of the bass you were totally knowledgable about before ordering it.

I guess all I mean to say is: I have no problem when you wanting to sell the bass for a profit, but to me this all seems way too quick. "Guys! I found this great deal on a bass! Should I buy it? I bought it, it came today, and I LOVE it! Who wants to buy it for a 50% up-charge? I wanted the exact opposite neck all along"

Quite literally, the "same good deal" would be selling it for $800 shipped.

Again--I have no issue with you turning a profit. But don't be surprised when no one bites on a bass that they know they could have for $800 and a return policy.

I would just sell it for $800 and find a used Amer. Stand. on Reverb or the classifieds. They go for $800 - $900 all the time.

It came and I didn't like it. I don't get the problem. And to me its not a big deal.A ton of people said I shouldn't take it back but sell it for a profit. Again if you bought a 57 precision for 100 bucks would you sell it for $400 ? After all its a nice profit isnt it? Even though it's worth $6000 I don't think anyone would. Same here. iam not asking a ton for it and just because you know what I paid for it does that make it right that I shouldn't sell it for a profit? You buy something from a store they make a profit it happens every day. I bought it from Guitar Center they had to make a profit they wouldn't sell it to me for what they paid for it would they? Somebody really needs to explain this to me if I'm doing something wrong because I'm still not understanding it

its not a cut in stone price either. I had to start someplace. and by going back at all the 83 basses in the forum they seem to be selling between $1000 and $1500. Like i said i really dont want to sell it I rather trade it. if someone has a bass close to mine and only paid 100 bucks for it I dont care I would trade no matter what was paid for it.

If you sell it you will know you asked the right price. If it doesn't sell you may have to keep, try elsewhere or lower the price.
You can change out the neck pretty easy but you will need to do a set up as well. Do you know how to do that? If not most luthiers will do a set up for you for less than $100.
If you do buy a new neck I would recommend staying with an American Standard neck from the same era if you can. You might not like the feel of another neck.
There are places that sell lots of used parts.

I actually wouldn't go so far to say that he's trying to profit on the good nature of the community. He's trying to profit on a purchase that he made. Theres no problem with that. I don't agree that a thread's worth of posts saying "go for it!" or "don't do it" is worth $400.

Wow never intended for this to get out of hand like this. I really just wanted to get a bass with a maple neck never wanted to piss anyone off. I got it and didnt like it right away for a number of reasons. ill pull it off the ads and sell it locally or just take it back for a refund (todays the last day I can get a refund on a vintage item) and explain to Guitar center that they sold it way to cheap. Maybe they have a bass i can trade it for as well.

Hmmm Most i see in this condition was all over $1000 to $1500 or more and the few people from here that emailed me about it says that $1200 is a fair asking price. well if it dont sell ill keep it and put a tortoise pickguard on and some black pickup covers and live with it.....lol And to be Honest I much rather trade it for a maple board one then to sell it..

I bought my mint 1975 P all original for $1500 not long ago. Mid-80s is not worth anywhere close to $1200 if you ask me. Guitar center's vintage bass center is a great pricing guide as well.

You want a maple neck? Keep the original neck (for future resale value) and buy one from the stratosphere on fleabay.
