Was checking out a behind the scenes of Trent Reznor for the Gone Girl soundtrack. He was using some gear (instrument?) that I have never seen before. Looks like it has a delay inside it as well as records whatever is mounted to the wooden box? It looks like one in the background has some strings on it. It also has some kind of light on it....

The video is on Apple Music, you don't need a subscription though. On the left side of this page click on "Recording At Risk for Gone Girl"

Apple Music — Trent Reznor

My first thought was that it was something akin to a spring reverb tank where you have transformers mounted to a spring that can freely move back and forth. Beyond that, and how that would translate into what he was doing, I have no idea. Trent is a clever guy to say the least, so I'm sure it's some mad scientist thing that he or a buddy of his built specifically for him.

Thank you very much!

Trent has all of the coolest toys and he used a ton of them on that soundtrack, including a Dewanatron Swarmatron.

You're welcome!

And yes he does indeed. I'd probably follow what he does for that reason alone.

I'm an unabashed odd/exotic instrument junky. And I'm especially hooked on experimental and one-off instruments. So I'd better stop now. Otherwise I'll just go on and on.
