I'd say see where it goes with michelle, doesn't seem like anything is going to happen with carmen at the moment, so she can't really hold it against you. Seems as though you do like carmen a lot more than michelle, but you can't force her to like you back at the moment, more than the hearsay that your friends are telling you. Just one lames opinion.

I'm guessing Michelle's family is kinda distant. It's a far-fetched guess, but it sounds like she indeed would want you to play her brother, or act as the gay friend she doesn't have/misses.
You can probably turn the situation to your advantage by being more to the point. If she jokes, don't hold up the witty comeback you have in your mind.

Find out what "Michelle" is up to with her shenanigans, just call her out on it. If she likes you, then pursue that. In the meantime, if "Carme" notices you now giving your "attention" to "Michelle" and she really wants you, she'll step up her "game". I dont know why I used quotes on "game" but it seemed appropriate.
