Yeah i've tried NST (5ths+minor3rd low to high) on guitar and bass. I've been tuned to 5ths on and off since 1994. More recently i commited to it and now play a 6 string bass tuned in all 5ths A E B F# C# G# (standard E string).
It took some getting used to but now i love it, it gives me the range of an 8 string bass and chords and scales all unfold onto the fretboard in such a beautiful and intuitive way. Chords sound a lot better IMO.
I was initially inspired by Fripp and the Crafties.
Cool. I have to give it another try. I'm a big Fripp fan. I saw him and the Crafties this past November in NYC.
That was a great show.
I think Dusty’s got a shot with existing strings.
I did this to-scale chart overlaying Dusty’s multi-scales with the existing tuning on Yves Carbonne’s 34” 12 string.
(Great therapy while nursing a head cold)
It shows where the notes on the 34” wind up on the multi-scale. I rounded up/down to the nearest fret.
Unless I screwed up, it looks like if you tune the top six strings a Maj7 above guitar,
you wind up only a half-tone beyond the D-nat.
That's where Yve’s existing high Gflat string sits (on 22”.
It would whole tone shy if you want raise the pitch so that all the open strings to better coincide with other basses/guitars.
You would have to find 12 gauges that work between the low and high strings rather than the ten on YC’s.
Even so, it seems that usable gauges should be out there.
I don't know if you understand the concept of fanned frets. The scale length has nothing to do with how many notes you can fit onto a string. It determines the distance between one note and the next. This is to accomodate better tensioning. The number of notes on the lowest string of a 24 fret fanned fret instrument is the same as the number of notes on the highest string. The only difference is that one string is shorter and one is longer and thus the scale of the notes is altered respectively.

The gray area depicts the new length of the multi-cale witness points.
I didn't depict the new adjusted fret layout.
I'm just showing the coinciding note (in red) of of each open string with the adjusted witness points.
Picture a giant angled capo over the neck of YC's 34" 12 string. The capo clamps over the lowest B string
at 32" and clamps over the highest D-flat string at 22".
The red notes show what nearest pitch would sound at those
points with each gage string at standard tension.
The blue notes are not layed out "geographically".
It just roughly shows the interval relationship of each string as a potiental practical way to tune with existing gages.

With this many strings, why not use a headstock design like the Rickenbacker 360/12-string guitar (offset tuners paired at 90 degree angles with half the strings coming down thru the 2 parallel cuts in the headstock).... seems to me a preferable approach.

I was in the 3rd row right in front of Robert... but that damn rack of his obscured my view except for his left hand...
But boy it was great... that was my 50th birthday gift from my wife, who I wish had come.
They say KC will be playing again this year! Haven't seen them since 1980!

Thats funny. I was 5 rows behind you in about the same position. I sat down and said, Jeez, there's no women here, just a bunch of 50-year-old guys.
Actually in my row there were two British women that either didn't have tickets, or where sitting where they shouldn't have been! They asked us to all move over a couple of seats to the right, which was a bit better.
But yeah, I was sitting next to a guy that looked like Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons!
Music geeks! Especially the group that congrigated around Fripp's rig after the show. (I was one of them

Much to my surprise, Bill Gallo, columnist for the Daily News was sitting next to us. He's pushing 80 and nodded out on my friends shoulder.

My brother was there too, can't tell you where... Crimson fan that I am, I decided not to go as I think a dozen Ovations would make my head explode. But my brother saw three different League shows that weekend.
