What to get?

So im looking to buy a new bass but im not sure what to get. I want something that is good for playing metal. Hopefully something with a nice growly tone but im not sure what kind of bass would work well for that. Im hoping to spend around $500 because that is all i have. I was just hoping for some advice or imput from you guys. Thanks in advanced

Ibanez, Dean, Fender, Peavey, etc., etc.

Its all in the pickups, and the strings.

Bright rounds, and probably sopar pickups, or humbuckers. Think Musicman, or Precision Bass Deluxe.

Ibanez for metal. AMS usually offers great deals on Ibanez basses thru their outlet zone and closeouts.
