+1 for the silver sharpie. My luthier recommended it when I first bought my bass several years ago, and I still use it.

If you’re on a darker stage it has to be white. I’ve tried black and several fluorescents but white is the only thing that cuts. A dab of bright white paint using a fine brush. You can scrape it off if you don’t like it. I never thought about white out, that might work. Can you even still buy it? What’s it used for these days? Computer monitors?

Rolleyes, like XontheP says, it has to be white, and, for me, non-permanent. Try chalk - 2-4 marks only. They'll wear down to the point the traces will hardly be visible to the audience.

I use a white-out pen to put on a dot or two when I know I’ll be on a dark stage and likely won’t be able to see well. I also wear ear plugs pretty often, so the little dots help a bit there too.

If you have a paper hole punch. Go to a sign shop & get some vinyl they use for signs.
I have done it, it works. Some will give you a small piece, some charge.
Be to cheap, look in their garbage.
