My brother surprised me with a late birthday gift.

Just got it like this.

Guy in reverb says "That sucks, but it was original packaging tho”

TF I do now? Mint otherwise, but neck is bowed pretty bad, not sure if I can adjust it out.

Open a reverb claim to get that shipping back. It doesn't matter how it came, it matters how THEY shipped it to YOU.

HOWEVER, I will say this. I buy a lot of Fender MIJ from eBay and every time they come in such a small, thin, completely non-padded factory box. I can't believe one was never damaged. They headstock and bottom of the bass is right at the edge of the box with no padding. What a gamble.

Take it seriously, and take care of it. No emotion.

Yeah, but my patience is run thin, just spent an hour with PayPal because Willcox sent me two garbage basses, said never to contact them again (I stayed professional) and they have both and I'm still out $1500.

THIS is why people buy on Sweetwater and Guitar center- if the schikt is messed up, you go right back and get a return, not deal with entitled tools.

I have and will make a few Reverb or other online buys, but ONLY, and I mean ONLY if it's a real brick and mortar business. I had a go-round once with a buy from what 'sounded' like a business, and of course was really some nitwit with a stack of old guitars and basses in his mom's spare room. Did not turn out well . . . .

REAL businesses have real return and refund policies, a BBB record, online reviews, a street address you can see on Google Earth, etc. I will do a search online and find a real website for a real store in a real city, and ONLY in the lower 48. I'll usually call the phone number and check it's still available and listen that it sounds like a real store. When I'm satisfied, THEN I go 'head with it.

Sorry for your troubles. If it's any help, believe me, I learned this lesson the hard way.

I thought Willcox was a safe bet, but that has turned into a nightmare as well, but they are small scale.

I also got screwed by local Lutheir Knightro too.

I love to support small businesses, but almost every time I get shafted.

Maybe I should just give up and stop trying to get the last pieces of gear on my list.

Yup I would agree with this. I have purchased 2 basses from Wilcox type places (Empire is one) and they were NOT cool about a problem after the sale, at ALL... and this is on a brand new FCS bass. These places don't have the corporate cash machine behind them so they take every little thing personally after sale. I sort of don't blame them, but will never do business with such a place again. The did make the problem right, SORT OF, but begrudgingly, and then radio silence after. No "sorry" or anything like that. In fact, they didn't really take the issue seriously at all after spending $4 grand with them.

Even though it is a double layer box, it should have been put into an outer box. There just isn't enough packing material on the inside to protect it.

If you can get the neck straight it might be worth it to request a partial refund and keep the bass, just try to repair that chip. Looks like you have the chip, so just some creative glue work and a paint pen to cover the glue line should do it.

We have so many small stone, glass, or wood art pieces that broke in shipping but my wife has repaired, and you cannot tell they were ever broken. She is a master at it.

Yep, so I filed a claim, not talking to the guy, not going to even try setting it up.

If he took some blame, I would have asked for a partial refund and try to correct it, but passing if off like shipping in an old inner box is standard practice- I'm noping out of it.

Anything I ship, its absolutely solid, tightly packed quadruple taped, padded full 360 because I know shipping companies toss stuff around like frozen fish, I NEVER EVER want someone to claim on me, I give them zero reasons to.

Just sad because it could've been good, now my bro is upset his gift to me turned into more work.

Problem is, if I ship this thing back, I'm responsible for supplying the extra box, and I'm trying to sell a bass currently that needs it.

Double boxing will do very little. yiu need to make sure that the padding you are using is tight against the bass. in a case you must eliminate any movement. If yyou pick up a package and shake, no movement should be noticeable. if you feel something moving inside, redo it.

And being a small business is no excuse for poor packaging or poor customer service. it has to do with company culture and not the size of a company.

That being said, the claims and story's you hear as a shipper are also pretty "interesting". I can understand some companies and that they block certain claims.

For the OP, that damage is on the shipper, absolutely zero doubt. just because a box made it to you relatively unharmed, doesn't mean that it is adequate for the next trip .
