What was your first bass guitar?

Peavey T40 identical to this one. Sold to buy a new jazz bass in 1993 or so.

The first bass that I learned on was a 'Montaya' that I borrowed from my step-father when I was about 13. Looked like this, only newer (I found this pic on the internets):

I bashed on that thing for a few months until he asked for it back. He didn't play... He just wanted it back. Big bummer. However, later that year, at Christmas, there was a trapezoid-shaped case under the tree at my mom's house, containing a bass that I could call my own:

Again, not a pic of the actual bass, but it was identical to this. Made in Japan (back when 'Made in Japan' really meant something - as Alex Lifeson would say). Mine had no name on the headstock, so I never knew what it was until I found this picture. This one says 'Global' on the HS.

I had a lot of fun with this bass. It sounded and played like crap, but I didn't know it. I thought it looked cool as hell and fell in love with it the second I opened the case. I took my first lessons with this bass... Formed my first band with this bass... Hid weed under the bridge cover on this bass... I loved this bass until I didn't love it anymore (and the mudbucker crapped out). Traded it in for a Yamaha BB300. But if I were to come across one of these again, I'd smile and keep on going.

A red Phantom bass. Not the ones that you see in a Google search that look straight out of the 60's but the P bass clone from the 80's that had a ghost over the word Phantom on the head stock.
I tracked it down once years later but never bought it back.
I found a blurry pic online.

A Yamaha BB300 just like this. I sold it for a $125 to Fund my G&L 5 string in 1989. I wish I hadn't. That G&L was to me the worst bass I've ever owned. Supposedly they were good but to me not really.

I had this exact bass, bought new in 1986 for about $300. 1st bass I picked up in 1984, a Pan (SG body) my older brother borrowed from a friend. Stayed home sick from school and figured out Tom Sawyer. 2nd song: Paranoid. A month later I was in a band

When I was 13 I had an el-cheapo short scale bass that came in a package with a little 15 watt amp. I think Drive made it. I spray painted the amp gold, lost it, and gave the bass to my sister years later. I don't have a picture handy, but these days it's being played in a bluegrass ensemble.

For fun I tried playing a bass the same size as an adult, and the thing felt like a ukulele. I'll take my 34" fiver please

I think I paid $200 new at the Prosound annual clearance sale in Boulder, CO. It came with the ugliest brown gig bag ever. I learned every song by The Cure, Joy Division and Bauhaus on that bass. I think I got it in late 86 and was in a band within 2 weeks.

My first bass was a dark brown Squier P that I got with a Laney 65w combo and a crappy Ibanez distortion for $200. Later traded it in for cash to put toward an Ibanez SR400QM, and had plans to do trade it before I even got it. While countless players have regret stories about selling their first axe, I couldn't wait!
I guess I still had my first bass as a nostalgia thing. Not because it was a great bass. I needed the money to get my next better bass.

Got it in '79 at a party. Seemed like a good idea at the time. But I didn't play yet, so what did I know?

It saw a lot of mods over the last thirty plus years. Bridge, pups, pre amps, and finally turned fretless. If it didn't weigh over twelve pounds I'd probably still have it.

It came with a Kustom rolled and tucked bass amp head and 2-15 cab.

I figured, four strings, how hard can it be? And every band seems to need one. Bring on the dancing girls!

My only bass until Talkbass.
