Mine was a fire engine red Charvel P with a pointy headstock and a particle-board body that my friends dad let me use/borrow to learn on. I don't remember the feel of it so much but do remember that I liked it enough to choose it over my second bass, a Rogue P, whenever I could. Toward the end of its life, the G string kept breaking and it met its demise in a fire pit.
Mine was a 40+ year old Marvel bass. It had sat for 20 years with the strings still tuned, which caused the neck to irreparably bend. Also, the neck was longer than standard and the pickup was quite awful. It was my first though. I finally bought my Squier and returned the dinosaur to my uncle from whom I was borrowing it from. I don't miss it at all.

My first actual bass was an MIJ Kramer neck-through I borrowed from the store at which I was teaching guitar. A couple months later, though, I walked into a local pawn shop and walked out with this, which lasted me quite a while (eventually sold it due to weight/balance - have a decent variety of instruments now, no particular one is my "main" anymore):

My first bass was an SX Jazz which I sold. I have 3 Peavey US-made Millenniums - a 4, a 5 and a P/J. The Milly 4 was the second bass I bought and is my main player. I also have a Westone Spectrum ST (very inexpensive Craigslist buy) and a Peavey T-40 that get some play time. Haven't bought or sold a bass since buying the 5-string a few years ago, I'm in a reasonably happy place with my stable.
The SX was a good bass - I'm really not a Jazz guy and I've had the opportunity to try Fenders and other top basses. The Milly fits my hands perfectly and gives me a sound that I and my bandmates like.

My first was a mid 70's P bass that I hated. Still makes me cringe to think about it. My current main bass is an STR LS-648, and it is miles beyond wonderful. I have not had gas for a bass since I got it, though we're not married or anything

My first bass was ALMOST an Ibanez (one of the cheap beginner ones). Thank god they didn't have it in stock, I ended up leaving with a Squier P-Bass that day and it is still my #1 bass a little over 8 years later. I have another P-Bass and a Kingman but soon I'm going to be getting a Fender Jag! Although I don't ever see myself parting with my first P-Bass, especially with all the things I've done to it over the years, and for the fact that (outside of the Jag) I don't see myself with another bass
Oh wow. I was kinda looking for a thread like this. I'll show my age with this though (but not talent). I bought my first bass at 16 which was roughly around 1975. I knew absolutely nothing about basses at the time and I've no clue what sort of amp I had then. It was a Hagstrom and, from some searches just now, about a 1965 model so it was already 10 years old when I got it. This pic is definitely my 1st bass (not mine but found the pic online). That bass is LONG gone, and good riddance. I could shoot arrows with the bow in that neck!
I particularly like this pic as it shows the vinyl that covered the back with a bit of a rip in it which I recall mine had too. Per some site the vinyl indicates it was '65 or '66ish.
I think my next was a Rick 4001 bought around 1979. Unfortunately that's long gone too. Paid $400 (well, borrowed) as I recall and made payments on it till I was 20 it seems! (I was a poor lad but eager!)
Now I've got my fabled 90's Ibanez Sabre sb900le, a 5yr old Precision and apparently a new Squier Jazz 5-string that I've yet to actually touch. But here's my throwback pic that I still laugh at when I see it.

I was late getting around to the 4-string machine. My first, about 12 years ago, was a Highway 1 Jazz. I liked it so much I bought a Highway One Precision 5 years ago which is now my main gig axe. There are several others that I don't regularly gig with, including a 1977 Ric 4001 and an Adam Clayton Jazz and a Gibson SG Bass.

First bass was a Commodore,looked like this except it was olive green.
It also had a hole where the controls are,3 strings, no tuner pegs or pickup surround.Pickup was held in by nails

First bass was MIM Fender P. I've had many others and have come back full circle to the P style bass. Only now I prefer them with 5 strings instead of 4.
First bass was a cheapo Washburn P bass. Now I'm into fanned fret five strings; I have a Dingwall, an Ibanez, and an ESP that I'm still on the fence about.
My first bass was a Fender Bullet(U.S.A. made). I had it upgraded & had a Fender humbucker installed in it. Sadly it was sold. I replaced it with a Squier Bullet, which I installed a pair of DiMarzio X2N-B pickups, custom wiring (series/single-coil/parallel/phase), a BadAss 2 bridge, Schaller tuners, a HipShot 'D' tuner & a Warmoth bird's eye maple Telecaster neck. Cheers! ;^D.

Not sure if there was already a thread on this, but couldn't find it by searching.
What was your first bass, whether inherited or bought.
I thought I'd ask as i decided to dig out my first bass and then decided to look into the make as I had no idea where it came from.
Turns out mine is a Musima Action Bass. made in East Germany during the Soviet Era
Will get pics up soon of it. (Attached a pic of one thats in good condition)
Its all kinds of crap...but did the job back in the day. Fender copy. Quality for everything was probably very dubious
