Mine was a Kramer Voyager with a super sweet gorilla amp. I bought them from a friend for I think about 40 dollars.

My most sincere condolences for your loss. I lost my dad when in my late teens so I know something about what it's like to lose a parent. It's nice that your mom made the sacrifice to get you your first bass. In addition to all the memories you have of your mom, that bass also connects you to one another.
My first bass was an Ibanez roadstar...a gift to me from myself. Hang in there man.

I bought my first bass. It was a killer black Epiphone. I treated that thing like it was a million bucks. I bought it with money I earned from mowing lawns all summer.

First of all, I'm very deeply sorry to hear of your loss. Know that most all of us lose a loved-one in their lifetime, and we understand what that feeling can be like.
My first bass was a Christmas present from my mom. I was eleven or twelve. I can't remember who made it, but it was a short-scale, and the body looked like a Les Paul guitar. It was a cherry sunburst color, and very cheap, but my family struggled financially throughout my entire childhood, and at the age I was, it was like making a $1 million investment for them.
I remember looking at it on Christmas morning, and being amazed. The only thing I didn't like about it was the pickguard... it looked like cardboard to me.
My parents eventually sprung for a year of lessons, and I remember on my first one, my teacher looked at my bass kinda puzzled, and said, "You know, you can take the protective pickguard sticker off, now that the bass is out of the box..."
Turned out it had a tortoise-shell pickguard.

My basses are all self-bought. My dad did buy me my first guitar many years ago thus ended up starting me into music. I remember once I had borrowed a freinds bass to experiment with and he commented that the bass suited me better than the guitar.
Many years later I see he was right. About LOTS of things. He passed away a long time ago and never saw me play live. Thank God my Mom has.
Ah well. He started me down this road and that is a huge gift in itself.

My first bas was a Crestline P Bass given to me by my brother. He was a guitarist and wanted a buddy to jam with.
The bass is probably worth $100, if that, but it means the world to me. I actually am in the process of revamping it.

About a year, a month and some days after my Dad passed on my Mom had several heart attack and small strokes. It also was New Years. It was touch and go for about a month (it sucks knowing that any minute your Mom could be dead) but she made it and after all these years is still with us. But that was a tough couple of years.
Life can be hard.

My first bass was a black Kay bass. I bought it after my first LSD trip and after I listened to Grateful Dead cds all night with my friend. Never did sleep and as soon as Ithaca Music opened shop, I went in and bought the Kay bass and a small amp for $300.
I never really played the darn stuff until about 3 years ago. By that time, which is like a 6 year difference, I got rid of it and bought a Fender bass. I also have since sold the fender. Now I have my Reverend. Good one and a keeper.

My mom bought me my first bass as well. I think it was 1972. She and I, and my teacher took two subways, three busses, and then rented a camel to get to the most remote section of Queens, NY. OK... so there was no camel! That night I became the proud owner of a 1967 Fender P. I still have it.

I bought my own first bass, and all subsequent. My parents weren't supportive of my playing.

My first Bass, which I got for my Birthday in October '04 was a Westfield B1000. Which I still have have play on very often.
Man you guys must be a bunch of youngsters! Both my first and second bass were gifts, a Sears Silvertone (Danelectro?)for my 13'th birthday and a brand spankin new Precision for my 15'th which was in 1966. I still have that bass by the way and due to the fact that I moved onto guitar in the early 70's it has survived in pretty good shape with no mods what so ever.

My 1st Bass was a Harmony solid body, with 2 rocker switches that I still don't know what they were supposed to do. Sort of looked like a P Bass. My Dad gave it to me for X-mas back in ancient times. My Dad passed away a few years back on his birthday Feb.24. I miss him. Sorry to hear about your Mom. But you've got an Angel on your side now.
