What was your first bass guitar?

It is never easy loosing a close family member Doc. My thoughts are with you.

My first bass was a Raven EB-3 copy that had the most horrid action possible. I put nylon strings on it and it actually sounded not bad. It was a gift from my parents when I was in high school back in 79. My mother is very much into music and was pleased to see me switch to another instrument. By comparison it was much cheaper than upgrading my drum kit :)

My first Bass was a peavy t-40,My folks put up the money. It really changed My life.Sorry for your loss and, hang in there Bro.

Me, too: a natural Peavey T-40, that I ended up cutting of the top horn for weight issues, lent to this stoner guy who ended up pawning it for drug money, and popped on ebay just a few months ago billed as "factory customized". Right.

Anyway, my dad bought it and a no-name bass amp for me back in 1984. The deal was that I had to give up MTV (it was a pay service back then...AND (pause for dramatic effect...) IT SHOWED VIDEOS!).

Sorry about your mom. My first bass was a Squier Afinity P-Bass, the one that they sold in the pack. My mom bought it for me when I was deciding what I wanted to do, as in play instuments, sing, sports, etc, etc...
I traded that one for another Squier, but know I'm trying to build my own bass.

Dr., very sorry about your mother. My wife and I lost hers two weeks ago, so I'm sure it's very difficult for you. We definitely think about the wonderful things they did for us along the way, which brings some solace.

And so it was that my parents, who always supported my musical endeavors, bought me a Peavey T-40 in 1982 along with a TKO 65 amp. They did this just because a band with great musicians was forming at my high school, and needed a bassist. I had played guitar for a couple of years, and cello for a couple more before that, so I figured the transition wouldn't be too hard. Turns out I felt comfortable on bass almost immediately.

Ironically, that band had only two rehearsals, but the bass thing really stuck, and it was all I played the rest of high school. Apart from a couple of short-lived, delusional attempts to be a lead guitarist, I've viewed myself as a bassist ever since.

Hang in there bro'.

First bass was a school loaner, some Hondo P-bass copy. Second was a red Arbor P/J bass, given to me by my mom. Third was a Fender American Standard P-bass, given to me by my mom. When I moved out of my folk's place, moms wouldn't let me take the Arbor bass with me because it was part of the family for a good many years. So it still sits in my old room.

So anyhow, I don't know what you're going through but I can definitely sympathize. My condolences.

First, let me say condolences and hang in there...

My first bass was a gift from my dad about 4 years ago. It is my current, Fender Standard Jazz. I had started playing in my current band (I am a former guitarist) and was elected to play bass. I was gigging with someone elses Washburn Axxess... pretty crappy IMVHO. He gave the Fender to me on Christmas as a surprise. Thanks to the guys at the music store, it turned out to be a great instrument and since the day I layed my hands on it I haven't touched a guitar. Bass is my one true love now when instruments are concerned... thanks Dad. I will never part with it.

Side Note: I hope to god that no one ever buys me an instrument as a gift again... unless it's a bass that I have held before and positively said, "I want that one." I got lucky with mine... my dad has never even tried to play an instrument before... very risky.:)

Cheese, really sorry to hear about your Mom, my prayers are with you and your family ......

My 1st electric bass was a 1963 Fender P natural finish. My parents bought it for me in late '63, along with a Sano accordian amplifier ..... paid ~ $250 for the whole package including the HSC, strap and cable. $250 was big coin for my family at that time, I have no idea where they came up with the cash.

Condolences offered, it's hard losing a loved one.

My first bass was a Musicmaster, which I saved up for myself and purchased for £70 in '76. I thought is was great and it had the al important 'Fender' on the headstock, just like Gary Thain's bass, my idol at the time!

My condolences. Always sad to lose a loved one.:crying:

My first bass was bought to me by my mother and father as a matter of fact! It was a Ibanez Musician neckthru from 1980. Lovely bass but a bit heavy for a little kid. I found my sound on that bass 'coz of all the time i sat without amplification and practiced. Even if i don't play it anymore i still have it and wouldn't sell it. You don't do that with a gift. My parents have allways been very supportive of me and my music. Thx mom and dad - I've owe you!!!!
