What was your first bass guitar?

A Norma. Yep, a Norma. 4 strings, 2 pickups, and it was red. I sold it 6 months later. Bought a 73 Fender P in sunburst.
Looking back, the P was awsome, the Norma was awful.
I would like to buy BOTH again. Just because.

In 1964, I played in a band in Tokyo & we got a deal with Teisco. I was just a singer, so when we went down to the factory I figured I wasn't gonna get anything. However, when we got there they said "Take anything you want." I got a guitar that had at least 4 pickups on it, a guitar amp & a bass that looked like a '51 P bass. Two years later, in San Antonio, Tx. I was informed that the band had fired our bassist(drunk again) & that since I owned this fine instrument, it was now my job to play it as well as sing lead. We had 2 weeks before our next gig. Yikes! The strings were about 3/4" from the fingerboard, but I didn't know any better. I played it until I bought a '69 Rickenbacker. Boy, did my playing improve fast!

I reckon its pretty interesting to see what people start out with, and what they have now.

My first bass, which still is my only bass, is a 57 Fender Precision Re-issue. Haha i was lucky to get it, Go ebay!

Uh, a dimestore acoustic 6-string with 2 strings removed and downtuned until it was unplayable.

My first real bass was a '68 Fender P. I bought it used in '70. That's the only bass I regret selling.

Now I mostly play a pre-EB MusicMan Stingray. And I'm going to buy a new P bass!

Started with a Satellite Precision copy in 1978, natural finish, maple board. Cost £84 IIRC. Gigged a good few with that.

Now - too many to list here (see profile), but the collection includes a 78 FENDER Precision, with natural finish and maple board. I like it because when I was a kid, I loved the copy but really, really wished it was a real Fender. This one makes this older young man a little happier. Good things come to those who wait, etc etc etc

Late 60's (67 or 68?) Mosrite Celebrity bass. I bought from my bass instructor in high school. It was a short scale hollowbody bass. The neck on it was very slim. I traded it in towards a 74 Gibson Grabber G1 that I bought new. Sold the Grabber to a friend of mine when I enlisted in the USAF in 78. I had no idea that the USAF had its own rock bands or I would have kept it and continued to play.

I currently own a Fender MIM Deluxe Jazz, Fender Mike Dirnt P-bass, and an Ibanez SR506.
