What would be your first pedal?

Have you tried the JohnK capacitor mod on the PorkLoin? If not, you should, it makes it a lot less muddy and a lot more useful. Might take away a lot of OCD gas :)
Thanks for the tip. I bought the PL specifically because of its low intensity OD. I'm very happy with it. The OCD just has a completely different character that sounds great, and it is easy to find used. I just have to figure out if I could put it to good use.

The mod will not make it respond badly as a low gain OD< that is how I use it. It will just make it a bit less muddy and more clear. It is very useful even at low gain settings, maybe even more so.

Yeah, so, I ended up starting with a compressor and an OD. Really was thinking about going with a preamp/DI, but honestly, I really like the way my bass sounds right now, and I don't really see a need for one. Which, I guess when i put it that way I technically don't need any effects... Which is a good thing, really. Anyway, I went with a Pigtronix Philosopher bass compressor and a Solid Gold FX Beta OD. I feel like both are great starting points right now. Eventually I'd like to go ahead and grab a preamp/DI, a Fuzzrocious Rat Tail, and one of the original MIJ "Octaver" pedals, and an EBS Tremolo. Thanks everyone for your help! You definitely gave me plenty of homework to do and go me oriented into the world of bass effects. I really appreciate everyone throwing in their input. Stay classy...... Planet Earth

Nah, brah. GMC knows. I'm not looking to do multi-effects pedals. They might do the same things plus a billion things more than what I just bought for the same price or less, but I'm just not cool with multi-effects pedals.
No worries. I've gone the individual pedal route too. Everyone needs to figure out what works for them.
I just picked up the Zoom B3 Thursday and am fairly amazed at what it can do, but I expect I'll hang on to my Markbass Compressore, Chorus/Flanger, and Super Booster/DI also. Probably the only other individual pedal I'd add would be a Tone Hammer ...
