But the neck....
They even put "TF" in the serial number for "two fingers".

It already exists, I had a luthier build it for me! It's funny, because I just replied in another thread that this bass makes me feel like "a signature bass was built for me, even though I'm a nobody!".

So here it is: A headless passive 4-string PJ! 34'' scale, swamp ash body, flamed maple neck with a 24-fret ebony fingerboard, and Hipshot hardware. The Aguilar pickups gives it a rather mellow tone, on the more vintage-ish side of the p-bass spectrum. Controls are master volume, master tone, and 3-way switch. I use the P pickup soloed most of the time, and the height of the J pickup is adjusted for just the right amount of "burp" I like to add on certain tunes. I have a boost pedal on my board that I engage when I go PJ, in order to keep the volume at unity with the output of the soloed P pickup.

Sounds great, looks great (at least I think so), dead simple, and super ergonomic. Bonus: It fits in a guitar gig bag, so it's much easier to carry when walking, or when riding the subway.

The answer to this question changes literally all the time for me... today, it's the following:

Body: Unbound Rickenbacker 650C shape, Maple, solid body, tummy & forearm contours.
Finishes: Black, Sherwood Green, Dark Purple Sparkle
Neck: 33 1/4 in Roasted maple neck, Rickenbacker 600 headstock shape, 40 mm nut width, Slim taper contour, 9 1/2" radius. Choice of roasted maple fingerboard with offset black dots or Rosewood fingerboard with offset cream dots. Headstock finishes match body finishes.
Hardware: Badass II bridge (chrome), Ultralite lollipop tuners (Chrome)
Strings: 4
Pickup Config: 1 split coil P, custom pickup cover to match control plate.
Controls: volume, tone, side input jack (Chrome)
Control Plate: mirror (black), cream (sherwood green), leopard print (dark purple sparkle)
Optional control plate/pickup cover colours available: brown tort, black, white pearl.

prolly been asked before.. but why not an update..

Mine would be a skinnier.. fender P bass.. with deeper contours.. creme overwound neomagnet pickup.. aged tinted AAAA flame maple on Hard Maple body.. extra heavy brass bridge.. with satin nitro.. and an aged gold anodized pickguard no knobs and a strat style side jack.. with age orange tinted birdseye maple/Hard maple wood.. sanded worn in aging.. 12in radius but well rounded edge fret board.. big frets. light weight tuners.. a retainer on every string.. reversed headstock.. and a 1.5" brass compensation nut..

I don't care if you like my idea..

and just for hell of it what would you do to get it made by a company?

I've never ever given this a thought. Mainly, I buy good serviceable instruments, and not a lot of them. 2 basses over the last 40 years, one of them for my son, and a 5 string. It is doubtful I'll be buying another one at my age.

If asked for my spec at this very moment, it would be a parallel-fretted 34" version of the new Ibanez headless six-string with closer string spacing like the Gerald Veasley models, Nordstrand Zen Blades wired passive VVT, and make that baby neck-through, mahogany body wings, bookmatched flamed maple top with a transparent gray finish, maple neck with walnut stringers and an ebony board with offset dots and Luminlay side markers. Pretty please with a cherry on top.

Mine would be a 1 piece all maple P, maple board, strat style side jack, no ashtrays, stock P pickup and humbucker at the neck position.
Sparkle polar white finish, bright white guard with my signature in black o it.
C shape neck and oversized pearloid markers with red stitching that looked like baseballs.

Mine would be a Rickenbacker 1979 thin neck 4001 with two Wal pickups and preamp in the jazz positions using the new Ric bridge. Ruby red with cream binding. Gold hardware. No pickguard like the 4004's.
