What would YOU do to save Gibson?

What would you do if you had the wheel? Hypothetically, if you had the power to do anything to the company that you wanted to, what would you do to right the ship, save the day, and bring Gibson back to their former glory?
Learn from Rickenbacker and Schecter and Gibson could recover and return to their former glory( get the price down and the quality up).

sell it to Elon Musk

Missed a trick there, could have sent Henry into orbit in Elon's Tesla...2 birds, single stone...

My couple of cents worth on the whole thing are, Gibsons are mostly over-priced for what they are (get a decent Epi, upgrade some bits & pieces and it'll be as good as the Gibson model, and you've saved money) and stick to the core models - LP, SG, TB, etc. and build them properly and keep the price reasonable, y'know like they mostly do these days in the far east. No-one wants the other stuff (see: Dusk Tiger)

Fender are almost in the same boat...I played a Squier P & a MIA P in a shop recently, and there is a definite difference in feel/quality/sound/finish/smell, but not as much as the price difference would indicate.

Just my opinion, but you're welcome to it :)

Wow. This is the first thread on TalkBass where people haven't chimed in just to show off one or two of their semi-topic related instruments
there, fixed! :roflmao:

- Hang Henry in the parking lot.
- Recall every new model since 1962
- Public apology for the Dusk Tiger, Firebird X, and every bass since the Thunderbird.
- Make one core line of Gibson classic designs and do not ever change them.
- Make all American males wear a t-shirt that says 'an Epiphone is not just as good as a Gibson'.
- Put a poster in the R&D dept. that says- Firebirds...long horn points DOWN.
- Did I say hang Henry Juszkiewicz?

Other than "Honor the company's founder (who was Left Handed) by making some lefty basses more than once every other 3rd blue moon", the above list just about covers it. Have to tell ya, though; at this point, I seriously doubt Gibson - as a company - can be saved. I fear it will wind up as just a brand name on some Chinese stuff, which may or may not be worth buying...:rollno:

I'm more than happy to see Gibson die. They've made 4,928,583,468,723,095,722,598,723,225 guitars that all look exactly the same. If Gibson goes under, there will still be a boat load of subpar overpriced guitars on the used market with their logo on them. I've never been a fan, and I knew 10+ years ago when my local guitar store (one of Gibson's top dealers) got in a shipment of super high-dollar LPs with glue residue around the bindings, sharp fret edges, and awful fret leveling that the company had become a joke. These were $7k+ instruments with issues you would be really disappointed to find on a $99 guitar. I understand QC slipping a little on lower-end models, but the super premium stuff going to one of your premiere dealers should at least warrant a once-over from Stevie Wonder.

Weird thing for me is that I just bought a 2016 Les Paul Special and it’s absolutely perfect! Believe me... no one was more sceptical than me that this was possible.. I looked hard for the flaws and I couldn’t find any, it’s exceptionally resonant and the neck feels fantastic... so they still have the ability to hit it out of the park... so if they could just do it consistently maybe they wouldn’t be in so much trouble.

There are ship loads of Chinese fakes that say "Gibson" on them.(seen a lot of fake Zakk Wylde models)
Some of them are built better than the real ones.

How about expressing your disdain for the company without dragging me into it, Okay? Because I happen to like both my Gibsons very much; and I seriously doubt a Chinese rip off is made better than my real ones...

What would YOU do to save Gibson? Greatest Hits.

Make one core line of Gibson classic designs and do not ever change them.

Sell no guitar with an MSRP over $2,500.

Improve quality control dramatically!

Surgically remove Epiphone from Gibson and let it stand as an independent company with a new CEO

Sometimes it’s better to lower prices for a while, sell more units, work on a reduced margin to get more cash flow and then go back to normal prices. This only works if you have a solid plan to improve quality and pay off debt

too much variation on a theme;

Good color options for plain top or solid color classic trim. Fewer colors for exotic trim levels.

Instead of so many crazy tops, how about innovating with core woods like Korina ?

Make a bass that has some basic ergonomic sense and looks at least moderately contemporary

i would like to see them do a workhorse line of guitars and basses under $500.

My favorite, and I'm still laughing... They've made 4,928,583,468,723,095,722,598,723,225 guitars that all look exactly the same.

Guess you haven't seen the bad ones. Gibson has stepped up their quality control lately but they have also let some pretty slipshod crap out for very high prices.

I’m always amazed at the amount of animosity the number of people who neither own or even played a Gibson show towards that company. And how gleeful they are that Gibson risks going under.

This comment truly amazed me:

Um…Fender has basically made two guitars and two basses for the entire history of that company. They’re virtually unchanged from the earliest models up to the most recent. And all four of them bear a strong visual resemblance to each other as well.

So…where does “all look the same” become a bad thing - or at least be bad for business? Not that Gibson hasn’t made several times as many far more different looking guitars and basses than Fender ever has. But why let reality interfere with a snappy zinger, right?

Some people truly are amazing.
