What would YOU do to save Gibson?

sell it to Elon Musk

You guys would detest Elon if he bought either Fender or Gibson. Most here have a fainting spell if either tries something that wasn't popular when they were kids in the 60s. Imagine the outcries when he started making Fender basses using 3D printers that look nothing like a P bass.... or Gibson basses built by micro robots that look nothing like a T-bird.

Gibson and Fender are both crushing under the weight of an "adoring" fan base that won't allow them to try anything new and doesn't but enough basses and guitars to keep them afloat.

What's killing them both is us. Period.

People will be doing their master’s thesis on this subject for awhile. The things that need to happen are far too numerous for a single post. If Gibson just did their product line management and QC like Paul Reed Smith, they would do much better. Gibson’s bass line is laughable and they need a serious effort to try and get in the game.

More people would buy Gibson products if Henry were gone.

I don't get the Epi inferiority complex thing. Fill me in please!

i would like to see them do a workhorse line of guitars and basses under $500. Solid guitars, stripped down of features, but giggable quality, set up and ready to rock out of the box.
They already have that. It's called Epiphone. Say what you want about Epiphone quality compared to Gibson etc. They're pretty much the same thing physically with slightly lesser (and sometimes not that much lesser) components. Tuners, pots, for some the pickups as well are easily modded and you have the same thing for half what the Gibson equivalent costs.

And Tobias?

Oh yeah, I forgot all about that. Unforgivable. Lemme fix my plan and expand upon it :

After I shoot Henry from a cannon into the open mouth of a Great White Shark, nature will take its course. Then, the shark that ate Juszkiewicz will poop chunks of him out, and then other sharks will eat that shark’s poop, and then the shark that ate Juszkiewicz in the first place will swim by and eat the poop of the sharks that ate his poop to begin with.

I'm more than happy to see Gibson die. They've made 4,928,583,468,723,095,722,598,723,225 guitars that all look exactly the same. If Gibson goes under, there will still be a boat load of subpar overpriced guitars on the used market with their logo on them. I've never been a fan, and I knew 10+ years ago when my local guitar store (one of Gibson's top dealers) got in a shipment of super high-dollar LPs with glue residue around the bindings, sharp fret edges, and awful fret leveling that the company had become a joke. These were $7k+ instruments with issues you would be really disappointed to find on a $99 guitar. I understand QC slipping a little on lower-end models, but the super premium stuff going to one of your premiere dealers should at least warrant a once-over from Stevie Wonder.

That's like 1 trillion Gibsons for every person on earth. :bassist:

Seriously....I would fire Henry for starters.

There are certain models of Gibson guitars and a couple of basses that are iconic...but for the most part when I hear the name Gibson I always think "oh...that company that makes these weird basses that most people regard as legendary but never actually buy (except for T-Bird owners)...hmmm, that sort of obscure company that lives on the reputation of Les Paul and Jack Bruce....the company that makes most of the basses you see in pawnshops....the company that has no "presence" in the minds of today's bass players save for the "They used to make the (fill in blank)" references...the company that is like RCA in the t.v. world (great at one time, but their "best before" date has long come and gone)....the company, who, if it wasn't for Epiphone I wouldn't even look up their products......the company that is just so out of touch with the times ".

Maybe guitar players like Gibson.....but there isn't a single bass of theirs that turns my crank.

Gibson needs a complete revamp.

Some great stuff here! I love Gibson, but the criticisms are certainly warranted.

I’m no expert, but I predict that Music Group will buy the brand and move production to China. I’m going to email Uli and ask how much he wants for Tobias.... :roflmao:

I was just on the Gretsch Talk site and someone said the same thing. Thing is Epiphone is competing with Squier, Ibanez, and Gretsch (not to mention possible others) in that price range. I just bought a brand new 2420 Streamliner Gretsch for $400 out the door. The quality and sound is amazing. I'd love to have a Gibson but they're too expensive. I also bought a used American Special Stratocasterer for $650 after tax. Why buy an Epiphone when there are other quality guitars in the same price range?
