I think three or four years ago, the 3rd gen nano when it first came out. I barely used it but two years ago I got the 32gb touch and i am on it 24/7 googling, facebook, talkbass. on it ATM as a matter of fact

Never got one because I don't buy into Apple's domination of my music inventory. I use my cell phone and rip music as needed.
although cd's are still my prime source of music...............I just get others to burn me cd's and I download them to my ipod

I never bought one until I got an iPhone about a year ago. My sister gave me her old one around 2006, the 2nd generation I believe with the b&w screen. Later my mom gave me an iPod mini she found at her work that nobody claimed.
I had an iPod Mini back in '04, after that I used my Palm Treo as my mp3 player. Since then I've always owned a smartphone of one sort of another, and thus have never needed an ipod.
'04 or '05. I was a freshman in high school at the time. It lasted me about 5 years before it finally bit the dust.
I had one of these back in junior high, around '01 or '02. I always remember because whenever I would search for it, I would always get results for the band. My grandma thought it was a hearing aide.
I had always used various MP3 players and cell phones with SD cards, so I never had a need for an iPod. Then I upgraded my phone to an IPhone earlier this year, and I love it.
My first was a mini like 7 years ago, then a classic, then a touch, and then I sold the touch to buy my iPhone 4
Got my 5th Gen 30g iPod Video in 2006. Been solid as a rock.
My son bought his own nano-no button in 2009 at 7 y.o., and he's not kind to it, and his is solid as is my Daughter's 3rd gen Nano.
Good stuff, thinking about taking the plunge to a MacPro tower with 8 cores. Sick of my Vista box crashing ProTools.

I got the first gen classic one as a high school graduation present in 2002. I retired it (still works) in 2005 when I got the 5th gen classic in black because I wanted 80 gigs. It's still in use. Though I usually leave it at home and use my droid x instead so I only have to carry one device, 32gig micro sd card ftw.

This depends on so many different factors but I'll pick two easy ones.
mp3 file quality varies but this is something that as a user you have control over
the default ipod earbuds are terrible (and you wonder why you can get them for free...)
i got a 3rd gen 20GB about a year and a half ago for $20 when my boss bought his IPad. only ipod i've ever owned.
It's true that there are a great deal of variables. However, just from personal experience, I listened to the same mp3s on two different mp3 players (using the same headphones), the iPod wasn't as good and my old iRiver.
