Whatcha watching?

Very reductive vision of art IMO. As an example, one of the best things I've seen is Kieslowski's Dekalog/Decalogue (parts from the same source material as A Short Film About Love and A Short Film About Killing). I wouldn't call it entertaining but engaging, fascinating, disturbing, highly effective and thought provoking. I could say the same for Klimov's Come and See - one of the most disturbing AND influential movies ever (not least clearly influencing Spielberg with Saving Pvt Ryan, Band of Brothers and many other films since with hand held camera 1st person POV, etc). I was never bored by these films.

I can certainly see that argument on the commercial/box office side though.
Come and See should be required viewing for everyone.

It's brutal (largely in what you don't see) but wow.
I was fortunate to see a very early US screening of it a few days before seeing Platoon when it was current and a critics darling and was left entirely meh by Platoon in contrast to how visceral Come and See was. So much in its style has been appropriated since that it's not that obvious how radical it was at the time.

I probably could have made the point better with something more obvious like Schindler's List as it was such a clear mainstream commercial, artistic and cultural success - which I would not describe as entertaining (assuming one's dictionary definition of "entertain" is "amusement or enjoyment").

As a sidebar on Come and See, an amazing bit of casting, in The Painted Bird (very difficult watch - but both have been compared throughout as both are through the eyes of dislocated children) the boy from Come and See was cast as a Russian soldier who takes the boy in Painted Bird under his wing. I was on set for some of Painted Bird - very interesting and well made film though not one to recommend to just anyone... it pulls no punches and stays quite close to the book including all the taboos.

Both this and Come and See are on my list, but I'm trying to find the right time to watch. I know they're not casual viewing.

Not casual viewing for sure. And can be haunting.

BTW I also had a little cameo in Painted Bird - I'm on the left. The director's son is on the right. Looking very Grapes of Wrath...

Outer Range, season 2, available on Prime. Been awhile, so I watched last episode of season 1 as a memory jogger. There's a short "Previously seen" from season 1 on new season's first episode. Won't start watching until my wife gets home and settled. She'd be a tad perturbed at me LOL

Partially related to watching things, there's a commercial from Kayak that tickles me. So I looked up the actress, Helen Wilson, in IMDB. Extensive work behind the scenes in the Art and Costume departments, and a decent amount of actress work, too. Involved in many recognizable works. She just nails this crotchety "I'm gonna do this my own damn self" role as she goes stormtroopin' across the field.

Yeah, I'm easily amused LOL

You think so? Their characters are pretty different. Anton Chigurh was cold and calculated except for a couple moments where he grinned. Billy Bob's character could act like a normal person. It's a great show.

Well put! I was only a bit in to the series but I'm 5 more episodes in now. He's way more duplicitous than Chigurh. Chigurh never wavered or put on airs, which started to cost him more and more as the story progressed. I've no idea what fate awaits Malvo, so I'll continue binging this weekend.

Chigurh is insane, but holds it together just enough to be able to get from A to B without burning everything down and killing everyone he comes across unless he's getting paid. Malvo is charismatic. If he's not out to get you, or sees something he can take advantage of, he'd probably fun to hang out with. Chigurh would just sit there and look at you till you peed yourself.
