One of my fave David Fincher movies, though. I was working at a movie theater when it was released, and I watched it the night before the release day with some employees to make sure the print was assembled correctly (kids, ask your parents). All of us were looking over our shoulders as we left the theater around 2am.

When you say updated, do you mean the Sky TV series from a couple of years ago with Keeley Hawes, or the 90's movie with Christopher Reeve?

The 90's one was a John Carpenter movie, so it had that going for it, but unfortunately it's probably his weakest movie, and sorely under-budgeted.

The recent series had it's moments, but it was mostly just veering between frustrating, and irritating.

He is meant to be playing a hot headed, impulsive, relative newby, and quite a lot of the comedy in that movie comes from that / the juxtaposition between the two detectives at opposite ends of their careers.

I hate to admit it, but I (still) really identify with that scene where his character is basically handed all of the pertinent research material, and all he can do is get an instant stress headache, and angrily berate the inanimate objects that have just added to his workload.

Not watched it yet (I meant to when it was starting the second season, and now I'm so far behind its kind of an intimidating commitment), but I plan to.

That reminds me though, way back when, recommending The Wire to some people, and several of them never made it beyond the first few episodes because they couldn't understand a word anyone was saying - I'd completely forgotten that there are several distinct tribes (cops / gangs / politicians) that each have their own lingo, and it takes several episodes to attune your ear to it, and then slowly get to grips with the slang.

It doesn't make any concessions, and just drops you in the deep end - but the reward is so worth the commitment.

Yeah, well, that free weekend of AppleTV...


I know a few people who started free streaming on Friday evening - so I guess the weekend started at the international date line, rather than local time.

Managed to watch The Tragedy Of Macbeth, on Saturday evening (very good indeed, even if it seemed more Bergman than Coen, at times).

Sunday night, kicked off Fly Me To The Moon (as I didn't have the energy for an almost 4 hour Scorsese epic), and then at a crucial moment the stream stopped, and it said that the free weekend was over 😡

Pretty p1553d 0ff, as I figured it they'd gone by the date line, surely they'd have to also extend into Monday morning, so that countries further West got the full two day weekend.

Then I looked at the clock, and realised it was an hour earlier than I thought, so I don't know what the heck they were playing at :rollno:


The kicker...

I clicked back on the movie, to see how much was left, and I get offered 3 months free followed by a reduced rate subscription 🤷‍♂️

I guess I should be happy, but to be honest I was feeling quite a weight off my shoulders having left both Disney, and Prime on Christmas Eve, and was looking forward to catching up on some of the Blu-rays I've been stockpiling.

Now it seems like I'm going to be bingeing Masters Of Air, Silo, season 2 of Severance, and no matter how dumb it seems, The Gorge. Not to mention a whole bunch of movies.

Also did some free combo of Apple and am a couple into Severance. An all melon fruit bar is the most dog crap corporate free lunch thing ever. So far it brings me back to my 401k cubicle days but trippier and Adam Scott is awesome. Enjoying it thus far. 6 more days on current trial.

The 90's one. I did not know it was remade again even more recently.
In my experience, I can't recall any movie or TV show that was a reboot/remake/update/etc that was better than the original I saw first. For that reason, when I find a show or movie I like, I stick with the one I saw first, not the remakes later.

The second season is coming out next week. You're gonna wanna re-up. It's a great show and ends in a fantastic cliffhanger. Unfortunately, the trailers are giving away too much, so try to avoid those if you can.

The missus and I just binge-watched all three seasons of Star Trek: Picard
It was... cute. A lot more slow-moving than most Star Trek TV series or movies, but it was nice to see Patrick Stewart imbue his (now much older) character with some age-appropriate frailty and gravitas.
Seemed to be a bit contrived in the way it all built up to one big happy reunion of the original Star Trek: The Next Generation cast from the late 1980s (...er, I mean from the late 24th Century), and there were some continuity discrepancies -- just within its own three seasons, not even talking about within the whole Star Trek canonical timeline -- that had us yelling at the TV.
I really liked actress Michelle Hurd, need to see what else she's done.

I'm going to start my binge rewatch of season one here soon, so I'll be ready to slide right into season two. I have avoided trailers just for that reason.
