Went to see Evil Dead Burn yesterday. It's pretty on-on-the-nose in what it's speaking to, and that really undermines it. What jokes there are fall utterly flat and there is only one sympathetic character. It's a disappointment. Evil Dead Rise is far better, as is Evil Dead 2013.
I know a few of you are watching Silo. I finally got around to watching S3E1. I've been looking forward to this and recently re-read Shift, which I assumed would be the core of the story this season. I gotta say, this first ep was just poor. Not only are they continuing to mangle the story line and characters of the books, but the result in uninspired writing that the cast can't seem to do much with.
With a story like this they have to combine characters and compress stories and expand on others. Like they did with Arya's story in Game of Thrones before the show was terrible. But I don't like how they're doing it in Silo, and the chapter to chapter back and forth like in the books isn't gonna work, and they're not good at basic storytelling. They're good at ambiance and sound design and the acting is good. But they suck at telling this story.
And Rebecca Ferguson was not a good choice for Juliette. She's not likeable. Juliette was gruff and short tempered, but endearing.
Damn. He was 78. I wouldn't have guessed. He was great in everything he did.
A real shame.
A great lesser known early stand out role of his was Andrzej Żuławski's Possession. Worth checking out in case you don't know it. He's so young in it and really carries it.
I checked out the series "Dark Side of the Ring" about professional wrestling, which sent me off to a documentary about Bret Hart and then another about his brother Owen who died from a rigging mistake.
Bret made an interesting point how people call professional wrestlers phonies yet people who are in make believe movies actors.

I see some differences...
Pro wrestling presents itself as a real sport (even if it's not too difficult to figure out that it's staged) while movies do not (other than documentaries, etc).
Acting is about trying to find an authentic interpretation of situations written by others. This is very similar to music, if you're playing a cover song, is that pretend even if the song was written by someone else? Other than tribute bands where one is trying to do an exact copy, it's usually about how can you do a more original - and genuinely felt - version of that song. Very much the same in acting.
Sure, there are some similarities but pretty big differences as well. I can see more similarities with stunt people.
Was it the 90s where Vince had to admit openly it was fake? It was in court, I think. I don't remember anyone but small children actually believing they're real fights. It's a real performance. They're really hurting themselves and each other to some degree, but I don't anyone besides little kids ever thought it wasn't a show.
These are good points and a solid analogy. It was fun to watch back in the 80's and 90's. Entertainment and athleticism.

Not without skill for sure. Very different skill sets... And, skills, again stunt people so impress me. Very good that an Oscar catagory for stunt design is being added. Long overdue.
It's the most impressive athletic performance I can think of. They're acting, memorizing choreography, and trying to make it look real while not hurting themselves or each other. I'm not into wrestling, or any other sports, but it's far more impressive to me then any pitching or catching for touchdowning or whatnot.
We used to break picnic chairs over each other’s heads when we were kids. One of us tied fishing weights onto monofilament line and swung it like a bolo until he broke his brother’s teeth. We jumped off roofs. We were serious. The back yard was the Colosseum. Slip’ N Slides, eventually when Wrist Rockets came out the same summer as pump BB guns, we ratcheted it up until a kid lost an eye…I wish i were making this up.
