New to playing the bass and just learning the basics. Read through a bunch of forum posts. Looking for an entry level combo amp (maybe 50 watts) for practice. What will get the job done without too much distortion and have a nice tone? Recommendations are appreciated. Thanks.

What's a good combo amp for about $200?

This amp by Fender is 60 watts, has a headphone jack, and is more than enough to get you started. I paid 269.00 new for it online.....good luck...................
Used Ampeg Ba115 can be had for $200 or a little more. It is 100 watts and will work for practice, jams and small or PA supported gigs. It sounds great and you should get into a band ASAP to further your development. Why buy twice? Try to get one made in the US. (2007 or earlier)
+1 on Ampeg BA112, depending on your needs. Will do very nicely in terms of tone and size if just a practice amp for home use, may not be enough oomph with a band. Use "PRICEWAR" coupon at MusiciansFriend and it's $237 new.
Peavey Max 112 or 115 is a decent starter combo also, although Ampeg has better tone IMO. You can use the same coupon code to save $$$.

The used ampeg ba115 or peavey tnt are enough amp to jam along with a couple friends or even play a small bar gig. Get one of those and you won't have to buy again until you consider yourself good enough to get out of the garage/local bar. If you're only practicing at home you can go smaller. I'd stay a step above the tiny beginner 15 watt practice amps so you sound like a real bass but in that category you can get something with headphone outs and rca plugin's so you can hook up a drumloop thing or play a cd through to practice along with. $200 can get you the smaller one new, probably with some change leftover or it'll get you the bigger ones used price.
Or one of the KB amps.

+1, if you're shopping used bass amps, plug into anything labeled keyboard amp as well, you may be surprised. A decent keys amp has to handle lowend just like a bass amp but usually provide a little more/better upper clarity as well.
Might go over the $200 quota a little far too much.
How about a nice Carvin combo? They're pretty cheap, but are made in the USA and sound great.
Orange makes a variety of small combos at low price points. I had to Google it, but the 20B runs ~$100, 25B ~$200, 35B ~$209, 50B ~$250.
I know I've read good reviews of them around here, but I can't remember which model.
good advice right here..... +1 one the getting into a band or at least jamming with some folks. Best thing you can do on speeding things up.
My Ashdown Five-Fifteen combo is plenty big enough for small gigs and practices, i got it used (1y.o) for AU $200, i don't know how much they are in the U.S, but there's been a big price drop in AUS, from $600 to $480. If that's too much, i recommend the Perfect Ten, still plenty loud just without the 15" tone. Good luck.
