What's an "analog input pair"

basically, an analog input pair means "two mono inputs". you can easily get stereo material into whatever device you are talking about by hooking the left channel into one and the right into the other. what device are you plugging your bass into? what brand/model?

One input will be panned hard left, the other hard right. Most likely, there will be one volume knob / slider to control both channels. This kind of input will be best used for a Stereo Keyboard, or something along those lines.

On devices that describe these inputs like that, the pairs are married, you can not separate the audio / can not adjust independently, hence best for stereo keyboard outputs or something like that.

You don't want to plug a bass into something at "Mic" level... Make sure the inputs are switchable to "Line" level inputs... (they most likely are)...

If one channel is selected (left or right), you are recording 1 mono track...

A "Stereo" track is simply two mono tracks locked to eachother... one panned hard left, the other panned hard right...

In your software, set Channel 1 (most likely the Left input) to line level and to record... you will record a single Mono track.

do i switch it in the device setup in my recording software, or something? there are no switches on the box and i honestly doubt it has this option

I'm already recording in mono, was just really confused at the beginning of the Cubase manual why it kept referring to a pair on inputs, as most mics/instruments only have one output...

yes, its in the software...

Are you using CuBase on a Mac or a PC?

In CuBase, you can have a "Stereo" track or "Mono" tracks... you want to hit the record button on a Mono track...

Plus, depending on the version of CuBase you are using, the setting is in a little bit of a different place, but you can set the input device, and you could then set the input devices setting, like Mic Level / Line Level / and input gain control.

Click on PreSonus ASIO Driver (FireBox) in that page...

You should see 2 audio ins and 2 audio outs.

Then create a Mono track.... Go to Project - Add Track - Audio... and Count should be 1, Configuration should be MONO... then in the Mixer the fader for that track will say MONO at the top. then anything recorded on that track will be MONO / One Chanel...

In the Sequence window on the Left you will see Left or Right to pick for the input when that track is selected... you can then choose Right or Left...

If you are having the audio come out of just ONE speaker its one or two things going on...

#1 - You are recording onto a "Stereo" track with one channel recording, therefor only playing out of one speaker...

#2 - You have the audio track panned hard left.

If you record a "Mono" track, it will come out of both speakers as long as the Pan is in the center.

Double check you are recording onto a mono track...

Feel free to post a screen shot of the channel you are recording on to, and Ill see if the settings look good there...

PS: My CuBase is 4 for a Mac, but they literally function the same... just one is capable of more channels and other small bits...

this is getting painfully ridiculous

up to this point I have been recording my solo bass track on the "stereo" inputs...not entirely sure about the mono vs stereo thing but I always figured I'd rather it come out of two speakers

so i start a new project, try to record to a mono track, and nothing records. I try the stereo again and voila, it records a signal , but for some reason it is very weak

I have my inputs on the DI almost all the way up.....this is getting really complicated

As jkramer5 mentioned... you are recording onto a stereo track... All your tracks are recording as stereo so the Left channel (channel 1) has your bass on it and the Right (Channel 2) is blank.

Generally you want to record a mono source (bass) in Mono. What that Mono to Stereo plugin does is through imaging, give the sound a stereo pressance... In short by chopping up frequencies and sending some to the right channel and some to the left (you can do the same thing with the same track copied to two different tracks, one panned hard right, one panned hard left, pull up graphic eq's and alternate the faders, 1 max / 2 cut / 3 max / 4 cut etc... and on the other 1 cut / 2 max / 3 cut / 4 max etc... (aka chop filter))

anyway back on track...

Your Mono Bass track when playing through a "stereo output" is playing back in "stereo"... Don't get the idea of copying your "Mono" bass track and putting one panned hard right and one hard left and expect a "stereo" image... you will get phasing issues and most likely if you collapse the mix to "mono" the bass will sound thin... *you dont have this problem with the chop filter I explained above because you split which frequencies are playing back on each track, therefor not the same tracks*

You can have a lot of fun with recording... just gotta get the basic sound input setup first...

and your halfway there..

hell yes I finally think I get it

i opened the window and used the preset '8 mono in' to switch everything to mono

do i need to switch the outputs to mono as well?

edit: after making the above changes, still will not record anything on the 'mono' tracks, but records perfectly to the stereo track. HMM
