Well, Mutron did make a phaser, but I am unsure if you are talking about the Mutron Phasor II, or the Mutron III which is an envelope filter (and a different beast, but can sound similar).

In short, phaser, flanger, and chorus can all be thought of as similar in some respects. I wouldn't say that any of the three is better than the other in terms of working for bass or not. Most, if not all modulation effects are bass friendly.

I use my small stone all the time. Never had a flange.

+1. I love my Nano Small Stone.

I tried flangers back when I had a multi unit, liked them well enough. But most individual flanger pedals that I have seen are too big for my liking on a pedal board, so I just stick with my little phaser and have a ball.

i love both phaser and flanger, but they both have very diferent uses.

phaser (i use a behringer EHX clone) i can use pretty much any time as i set it up as a subtle swoosh in the back. think pink floyd > animals > pigs

flanger i use the barber pole flange (it has an infinate repeat cycle so the repeats in the delay section feed back into the next cycle causing a spiral effect in the falnge) on the line 6 pod x3, full on space bass swooshyness. great with a fuzz. think like larry graham doing phantom of the opera in that famous youtube clip

I honestly like the phaser sound better but for slower stuff IMO a flanger work better to give that big fat wide and deep sound and for the one or two slow songs we do I use a Boss BF-2 and gets the job done.

The HBE Psylocibe is prolly my fave pedal ever tho.

Personally I like flanger effects on bass. it sounds more colorful than phaser effects. I mean phaser effects are okay and all but I like flanger effects better. also when combining distortion with flanger, you can easily get and eddie van halen sound on bass. other than that, I'm a big fan of chorus effects on bass.

I have a Boss PH-3 phaser pedal that I like to use occasionally, and an Electro-Harmonix Nano Clone (chorus) which I leave switched on all the time. I've never been a big fan of using flange on my bass guitar, though I do use it on my synth a lot.

Wasn't he using a "Jet-Phase" on that clip?(combo of both?)

I think it's just a matter of preference. While I don't dislike flangers, it's not an effect I find "interesting" as an addition to my pedalboard. On the other hand, phaser is an uber cool effect to me. You can hear the one I have here.

My phase (Small Stone) and flanger (elektra) have been with me since the early 80s and get the most use on my pedal board. I say get both!

I have to completely agree! I have owned so many phasers and flangers and the Psylocibe is just the best sounding and most useable modulation effect I have ever found on bass. I have owned a bunch and noted the following:

The block Phase90 clips too much
The script Phase90 is too subtle
Nano Small Stone is just a bit too subtle
The Keeley is expensive and sucks too much low
The Retrosonic is too subtle
The Empress is expensive, too complicated and over the top
The Cmatmods was too subtle
The Diamond was way too subtle

There are others but for bass, you just cannot beat the Psilocybe for overall tone, no volume or low end loss, true bypass, no added noise, dead simple and uses normal 9v power. She is a winner!

Here's a noob question: how is flanger for slapping ? The block phase 90 reacts well to my (poor) slapping "technique", but would the MXR Micro Flanger react as well ?
