What's On Your Workbench?

And this mofo is finally done...mostly. Nut still needs work.

Nice, could you describe your stain, fill process? Sprayed, brushed, wiped?

Sure. It was all of the above!

First step was I applied some black Timbermate pore filler. I wiped it on, rubbed it into the pores, and wiped off as much as I could. After it dried, I sanded the excess off so that the filler remained only in the pores. (Source for Timbermate pore filler: Invalid Link Removed)

The second step was to rub on some dye. I used heavily diluted black Transtint dye, mixed with denatured alcohol. I did a single application to get the light grey color I was looking for. (Source for transtint dye: Dyes, Black - Woodcraft)

Third step was to brush on two coats of Zinsser's dewaxed shellac sanding sealer. I applied two coats with a foam brush, and waited 1 hour between coats. I also block-sanded with 600 grit sandpaper after each coat. (Source for shellac: Sealcoat Universal Sanding Sealer, Quart - Woodcraft)

Fourth step was to spray on some Minwax Polycrylic satin clear water-based polyurethane. (Source for polycrylic: Minwax 1 qt. Satin Polycrylic Protective Finish-63333444 - The Home Depot)

Last step was to level sand the poly with 1,000 grit 3M Wetordry sandpaper, then hand-buff it to make it feel worn and smooth, though still totally covered with poly.

Swapped out pickguards ahead of packing this up to ship off to a customer. I always find it amazing the transformation something as simple as a pickguard swap can make on a bass

Black/W/B guard is how this went to NAMM, and Tort/M/B is how it will arrive in the Bay area next week.

several PJ5s and a 1-piece Swamp Ash J5 working their way thru production

the swimming pool route is intentional, and allows the modern P5 sized pickup to be configured standard or reversed with a simple pickguard swap.

Wiring day: 10 sets P4 vintage, 5 sets P4 modern, 3 sets P5 vintage, 4 sets J4 splits. There's quite a bit more than this in the wiring queue, including 5 sets of J4 vintage singles, but these are the initial sets I'm working this morning

Hey Rodent so you are Honey Badger pickups? I saw the demo of the P pickup in the Lull it sounds freaking fantastic!!!!
thanks M2E - I'm a P player at heart, so that pickup design is rather personal to me if you know what I mean.
