What's On Your Workbench?

OK, my husband came home and helped me lift the vac into place.

It's pretty warm in the garage, hovering at about 95 degrees, so I'll wait until the morning to install the filter and bag, then I'll be ready to rock.

Was it buried somewhere in all those words?
I can only half pay attention for about the first sentence and a half. If I don't see pics by then,......

I can usually get through it all but I kinda fade in and out. Wait, wait, sorry, that’s my wife’s stories… :D:roflmao:

I kid. I kid. No, really dear, if you’re reading this I’m joking.

I’ve been pretty busy at work lately but I’m spending a few minutes every couple of days making a new tote for this big ol’ Stanley No. 32 jointer plane.

The original is broken at the top, like most of them are on the old transitional planes, and I didn’t have a piece of beech so Stanley is just going to have to settle for mahogany. It looks classier anyway (and I had a piece the right size) and this plane was made around 1905 so it deserves a little sprucing up. I already flattened the sole and the sides and the bed is remarkably free of cracks. It should turn out well. I bought it for $20 at a flea market a few months ago.

The original tote:

It has also given me a chance to use the Shinto rasp my sister got me for the holidays:

Man, now I understand why people rave about these things! That sucker really cuts!

The ultimate mounting design for that thermometer! The vacuum is nice too!

Thanks! It's funny about that thermometer. We bought it years ago, and we didn't really have a place to mount it on the wall (being that all my stuff was all over the place). So I just left in the package, and hung it on my pegboard. At the new house, there was a nail in the wall - who knows what originally was on there, so I just hung it there temporarily and there it will probably stay.

That's an insanely hot temp for where I live. :D When it gets up to 29-32 degrees, I live in a dark basement room full of fans. :smug:

For these parts, that's actually pretty cool. In the dead of summer (next week thru the end of September), it's not unusual to get in excess of 115. I've seen that thermometer pinned on occasion.

I'm curious about your assessment of that dust collector. It's on my short list.

I like it. It has plenty of vacuum and since it mounts on the wall, it's partially out of the way. Easy enough to change bags, and I like the optional filter, which helps keep smaller dust particles out of the air, and directs them into the bag. I had an issue with it when I first brought it home - it was dropped during shipping and I had to bend the frame back into shape - was too lazy to bring it back, but it's been bullet proof since. I can have three hoses on it at once in series, and it easily sucks up the saw dust. It can stretch all the way to the other corner of the garage with the hoses, and still works great. Much better than the floor vac I was previously using.

Sounds like it was dropshipped.

Sorry, can't help myself. :rollno:

@mapleglo I'd encourage you to think about how you plan to empty that dust collector bag once it is full. They can get quite heavy and it looks to be up off the floor a bit. I know a lot of guys who rig up a cart system so the bag basically sits on a cart, they unclamp it from the collar and wheel it out. I only mention this because you've said a couple times that your strength isn't great these days. Something to ponder.

Thanks for your concern!

So far, I've been able to remove the bag and take it to the dumpster without too much trouble as it starts to get about halfway full. If it gets any more than half full, I get my husband to carry it out for me :P
