What's On Your Workbench?

Wow.

Ebony.

8 string.

Kahler.

Stone frets.

Ya don’t see that every day!
I forgot to mention dual titanium truss rods. Here is an early mockup shot before I sent out the neck for the stone frets.

I spur-of-the-moment built a neck today.

The backstory: I have this Squier Jaguar body that I had previously built into a five-string. It sounded great, but I discovered how much I dislike offset bodies (specifically the wonky way they sit in instrument stands), so I dismantled it.

Meanwhile, I have a guitarist friend who keeps asking me to build him an eight-string bass. And he likes Fenderish stuff. Hey, that might work!

I’ve had this basic idea for quite a while, I just couldn’t decide on exactly how to build it. Today I got tired of being indecisive.

First I decided to enlarge the pickup route for a Wilkinson MM pickup from my stash.

Then, in an atypical fit of decisiveness, I chose a pre-scarfed neck blank from my stash, a 32” scale fingerboard from my stash, and went to town.

Measurements taken.

Cut to length.

Routed for truss rod.

Rough tapered, then final tapered.

Heel shaped to fit the Squier pocket.

Fretboard cut to length, rough tapered, then final tapered.

Truss rod installed, and fretboard glued.

Have to let that be until tomorrow.

It sure is nice to have a good stash!

Chairs once again, then bedroom furniture.
I do have instruments on the roster, both scratch build and parts build, that I really hope to get to before too much longer.
But bills have to be paid. I also have a commission for a poolside tiki bar and one for a covered porch so I'll get to the basses when I'm able. :D

Did buy some maple, ash, walnut, zebrawood, padauk and purpleheart for the woodpile, so I have some nice selections once I do get to turn my attention to that.

I will happily go against the grain here and say that I like it much better with the guard. I feel like "vintage" styled instruments look wrong without one, almost like they're naked or something. It just looks like you forgot to put the guard on. To me, at least.

But I do agree with @5tring that black or cream to match the other colors might work better than white...

It’s cream, not white.

the pickups have yellowed since the 70s, so they’re darker. But both are cream. Hard to tell in pics ....

I'd go with black or no pickguard. The cream is in 'close but no cigar' territory and ends up looking like a mistake. Black or (gasp) Tort would look deliberate.
