He was a pretty good in-the-pocket player too, check his work with Hawkwind, especially Space Ritual. Surprisingly tasteful and he could really lay down a good groove when it was called for. There are countless inaccurate bass covers of Motorhead tunes on Youtube where they just play power chords and ignore the fills and filigree - Killed by Death's outro is one I rarely see done right. His right hand technique was utterly distinctive as well.
 
From what I understand he was just a super cool guy. A great preformed. And a solid bass man with his own thing going. A unique way of approaching a bass line. There is a great documentary about him to help you understand the man. His bass playing is not for me, but I like what he did. And love the attitude and approach.
