The Dx5's don't suck. They aren't the greatest, but they don't suck. It's preamps in the DX5 equipped sdgrs that suck. I swapped out the "radioshack electronics" in my 305 and it's a pretty good bass now. The 405's pre-amp sucks too. Fieldy uses a 3005 (the natural finished one) and custom "prestige" series sdgrs. Sdgrs don't have weak necks either, in fact the necks are surprisingly stable for being that thin. They have good B strings too if you have strings that are newer. After the B string is about 2/3 dead, the B is horrible. If they're newer than that, the B is great. Sdgrs have really tight spaceing though that's a real pain to slap (if you learn to slap cleanly on those things, it will help you become a lot better slapper when move to normal 5-string or wide spaceing) The prestige sdgr is only the good stock sdgr, and is a lot of bass for around $1000. rafterman, why do want a sdgr so bad? There are much better basses for the $ out there. If you think that sdgrs are the best basses (excluding the 3005) out there, than you need to find, look at, and play, ALOT more basses, or seek help. About Warwicks, good tone is worth the weight. Weight problems can be fixed with a good strap. You can't fix tone problems with the $30 you'd spend on a strap. Why does everyone think fieldy sucks? He created a unique tone and different playing style that accompany's the rest of the bands sound perfectly. That's a hard thing to do. Has anyone ever heard him play, without the band to see what he can really do? I don't showoff everything I can do when I play with my band. Does that mean I suck? Not at all, it means that the songs don't need me going wild on bass(we do have a couple songs where I show some skill, but not all). Part of good bass playing is knowing when and what not to play. I admit there are plenty of better bass players than fieldy, but he doesn't suck, but this is IMO.

What's the best 5 string for metal ?

I have an Ibanez SR506 with the ADX6 pickups. The pickups are not the problem, it is the crap preamp that Ibanez puts in the Soundgears that is the problem.
I heard a 405 with the stock DX5 pickups, but the preamp had been replaced with a Bart preamp, sounded great!
As far as AssMans comment about the B string, he is right. IME, Soundgears have a pretty good B when the strings are new, but the B goes dead long before the other 4 or 5 strings do.
And my 506, despite the slim neck, has been as stable as any of my other wood necked basses.
I like my Pedulla and my Zon more, but for the price that I paid, the Soundgear was a pretty good value.
BTW - Fieldy is a bassplayer? I thought that he was a percussionist?
