I had a 2000 MiM Jazz that was stock when I got it, and the pickups they used at the time stunk. I replaced them with Fender RI '62s, and put a BAII bridge on it. That bass sounded amazing after that.
Nordstrand JJ single coils to a good G&L JB2, ash/rosewood. Eventually sold it as I was migrating to 5 string, but have heard my buyer perform with this bass - she digs, it, and it sounded great! In retrospect, kind of regretting the sale, although happy to see the bass in good hands...
Well, after consulting with a friend who is a physics professor, we decided that nothing improves bass tones like red sparkles. It really does make a difference.

I took My ltd B-5e, ripped out the pre amp and pots. Rewired it like a modern Rickenbacker. Sounds so killer. Now if only i knew someone that would lovethatbass with Alumitone's from lace...

I actually added a greasebucket circuit to my PJ. I made it switched but used it 'on' most of the time. At the same time i added a phase switch and installed additional tone caps...
Series/parallel wiring for 2 pickups or just for a split coil. Extra sounds without extra holes.

It's definitely my headstock decal. Something about it makes the bass sound so darn-diddily-good!
Hi have a MIJ Marcus Miller bass..
Wanted to install the Sadowsky onboard preamp with VTC control... however, some time ago i tried to install an EMG BQC preamp but I couldn't complete the operation as the control cavity of my bass has a sort of wooden rise (5mm thk. more or less) which is higher than the base of the cavity as it is elsewhere, ultimately making the installation of the preamp impossible (BQC is also printed circuit boards based as the Sadowsky)...
Did you face the same problem with your MM and Sadowsky preamp?
Do you have the same locally risen cavity bottom or, although present, the preamp could installed easily anyway?
I'd like to check your case before asking somebody to route that piece of wood off...

Gotoh Res-O-Lites on my Ibby 5 String (just yesterday) and I really like them so far - much improved balance.
Once the action is good I play with pickup heights as mentioned by others to get the attack and sound I like. My bass suits my sound though, guess I'm lucky there.
Straplocks.
Strings make a huge difference. Why isn't there a string dealer who has a whole heap of Youtubes of their range of strings on a common, known bass (eg Pbass, Jbass, Ric or EBMM) using a range of techniques (pick, finger, slap) with the same guitar and amp settings so the great unwashed such as myself could make informed decisions on which string would suit my needs? If each string was on a different clip you could play them back to back and compare. I'd buy strings off them even if there was a freight price issue just as a thankyou for a job well done.
(I have a PJ and would love to hear how a tone control on each pickup would sound.)

Got a pair which I briefly installed on my MM jazz bass but I wasn't too impressed ... I preferred the SCN I had before ...
Recently stuck an Audere 4 band in my Valenti 5. Can't say it's a marked improvement (...replaced a Sadowsky pre) but I've discovered I really like the passive roll-offs on both.

The bass is so light, it feels like I'm playing...nothing at all. Nothing at all. Nothing at all.
It fitted, but it was close. Maybe you can see on the picture...
EDIT: picture is taken in testing phase, before moving preamp to old Marcus Miller pickguard. Now it looks like this:
