hey guys, what is the catch with wishbass?

am i seriously supposed to beleive i can get a wicked awesome custom bass for $400-$500?

how do these things sound?

hows the quality?

are they really too good to be true?

I never really liked wishbasses. All the horns and things that stick out would really bug me. And they look like they would break off. Some people love them though So Its really up to you. If you like it then thats all that matters. Just play it first dont order online.

Imagine your talented, but certifiable, uncle who lives in the hills and survives off the land around him, building you a bass that works and sounds really wild, but with lots of strange quirks, and not a whole lot of attention paid to details (like the finish not being sanded smooth or a screw inserted near the nut to hold a string in place). The bass plays like none other, and is really wild, but it's DIFFERENT, and certainly not a production quality instrument. However, where they lack in finishing touches, they make up for in personality.

like, what are we lookin at here for deficiencies?

i wanna cheap, good soundin, wicked lookin bass, that i can play like mad, and not worry about it bustin. can i get that out of a wishbass? (minor details arent that important, finish imperfections, assuming they dont inhibit playing or durability, dont matter)

If nothing else, I think Wishbasses work as pretty cool pieces of sculpture. Their value as an instrument seems to be debated endlessly.

If you want a piece of art that is mildly playable, go WishBass.

With mods they CAN be decent basses.

They are the SX of the custom bass world, out of the gate they need a little help, but after some attention they can be a great bass.

Well, the fact that he uses nails as fret markers, and it is completely impossible to play in tune up and down the neck, would be major negatives for me.

The catch on wishbasses is that they suck.

Seriously, they are of the lowest conceivable build quality. Fit is terrible, the finish is worse. You'd be wasting your money even at $75, because you'd be buying something else within a month.

I had one that sounded great, but I couldn't get used to the neck. It was like a baseball bat. It was trying for an upright-like radius, but just didn't do it.

Okay, now THAT'S REALLY funny.

All kidding aside, I can hear how a bass with that particular tone could be very useful in a studio setting. There's a midrangeyness to the tone that works for me. But I certainly wouldn't just slide blithely up and down the fingerboard like James Earl Jones subbing for "The Teacher" in a Charlie Brown TV special (which was, of course, a trombone w/plunger).
