What's the deal with SX???

You mean beside the fact that I run the CAD software for the CNC here on base? Nothing at all.
Discussing SX pros and cons is an overused topic with the end result being zero impact on anything meaningful or resulting in any change of opinion.
I'd love SX's to be a great cheap option but from what I've read, after spending $150 on the bass (cross your fingers that's not a lemon) I'd need to change the strings, maybe the bridge, the pickups, the tuners and probably the electonics too. That's a lot of money for a fake Squier.
I dunno, I spent $150 on an SX (the 75 Jazz with pearloid block maple neck) and all I had to do was a basic setup. I'm even using the strings it came with.
SX is amazing bang for buck. If what's written on the headstock is what matters for you, then SX is not for you.
they are great beaters. i keep all of my gear in a covered trailer cause i do 120-150 gigs per year. i can't afford to keep a lakland around my house, and with kids everywhere it would be a terrible idea anyway. for this purpose, sx's are great basses. i probably wouldn't gig it without replacing the nut, bridge, tuners, pickups, wiring, etc. also, they are great for students. when i was 13, $100 dollars couldn't buy you anything like this. you haters should see my cheapo amp i keep at home. it doubles as a scratching post for 3 cats.
I think fitz420 hit the nail on the head. I just bought an SJB-75 off a fellow TB'er for my daughter. She recently graduated with a degree in music education and started her first job at a middle shool teaching general music to 6th through 8th graders. She plays guitar and is learning bass and wanted to have something that she can use both at home and in the classroom without worrying should something happen to it.
I recently went through a long, epic experience with an SX bass, with a happy ending (which I posted earlier this week). Those who follow the threads will know it, but it's too long to go into here.
This is the best way I can sum up the Essex (SX) "thing":
I had my $99 P-Bass copy set up by one of the very best luthiers/repair guys in the United States. He told me that it "sets up like a $3000 bass." Earlier, he had told me that another client had one with a neck that was "broken", i.e. unrepairable. Firewood.
It's a wild, crazy, thrill ride of a gamble! Take it! (Rondo Music will accept returns.)

Eh....don't sweat it. Just a little fun. For as many SX lovers here there are many SX haters too. Typically a post such as yours gets hammered by the "SX StinkS" and "Do a seach" Police. However, your post was raped by the wise ass commitee!
I found out about SX from this board, and now I have 3 of them. Maybe buy one and find out for yourself what is so good about them. If you do not like it, many guys here will buy it for almost what you paid for it.
And more than the quality/bang for the buck of these low priced basses is the way Kurt runs Rondo music. Top notch guy and customer service that is really super.

And in my specific case (this doesn't apply to everyone) I bought a Rickenbacker when I thought it would make me a better bass player. When I got over myself a bit, I started playing (and loving) my Squier. Now it brings me great joy to buy something cheap and make it sound pleasing (to my ear.)
Ah jeez... Your opinion is your opinion, and I respect that it is your opinion. But since you offered it, can I ask what you base your opinion on? I mean, if I took every negative opinion as Gospel (like the pun?) I would never own any brand of car, foreign or domestic, never buy any boat, bicycle, toaster, tennis shoe, beverage (especially beer) or anything for that matter. Some one some where hates it, and guess what? They are all on the internet!
But think about it. If there were really that many lemons compared to how many Rondo sold, Kurt could not even afford to keep the lights on.
Here is an idea, why not try one out before you form an opinion? And be realistic, do not buy an SX hoping to get a Lakland that someone mistook for an SX.

But that color sucks,cheap Chinese, child, slave labor applied paint that is full of lead and nucler waste. And I would have to finish painting it black as some lazy bugger didn't even bother to paint it all the way!

I don't think you'd get a hand painting on the ashtray at this price-point. Those must be stickers, I'm almost certain of it because mine never showed up with the "camera guy" on the ashtray. Must have fallen off during shipping - in which case they couldn't have been quality stickers to begin with. Cause when it comes to stickers, you get what you pay for.
I wondered the same thing. Read all the 'greater than sliced bread' and 'worse than firewood' posts. When one popped up locally on CL for $140, I went and took a look. It was a 75 Sunburst Jazz copy with a hard case, BA bridge and new set of Rotosounds. I bought it and now my vintage Ric 4001 and MIM Jazz Deluxe hang on the wall. It plays and sounds as good if not better than either of those. I get questions and compliments on it all the time. And if it falls over and gets dinged, who cares!!! Just my .02...

Ive been playing my stock SX fretless jazz bass right out of the box, with only a minor bridge adjustment. $140 shipped to my door, sounds much better than my Squier P/J. Though I did get that one off some kid for $50 cuz he never played it and liked my band.

I normally play an LEJ 5. I picked up an SX 5 lined fretless as a project bass... Not much different than Fender. I few minor upgrades including reducing the globular neck finish to a satin feel and you've got something to work with.
I play what I like. Sadly most FOH mixers lack EQ skills to translate the band for the room... Never trust a soundman that doesn't come up on the stage to hear individual and live band sound...
